This is sme pretty sad news... How the hell does a game get pushed back an entire year? CA needs to be a little more conservative with their estimates and give themselves more time to work insted of getting our hopes up only to crush them time and again...

Autumn 2004??

Well I see this as both a bad and a good thing.

The bad news is we have to wait several months longer to play RTW than we originally expected. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

More bad news is CA will have even fewer excuses if RTW is released with thoroughly mediocre AI and glaring bugs. You can imagine the sort of incendiary reaction RTW will get here at the Org if the game ships with showstopper bugs, terrible AI and other nastiness... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

The good news is CA now has that much longer to hone and polish RTW. Everything including the kitchen sink as the saying goes. I'm sure it will be worth the wait. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

How the hell did they manage that? You know the irritating thing? I bet CA will have the game ready for release by summer, but Activision are making them wait for Autumn for maximum 'market penetration'. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

activision are stupid, honestly, CA should get a better publisher

Pushed back one year? Only the most optimistic people thought RTW would come out this xmas. Hell I remember someone who actually thought the game would come out same time as VI just because it said so in a magazine.

Now we finally have an official date..before that it was just speculation..

Well, one thing is for sure, this announcement has been some time coming... it's been very frustrating watching the speculation on the forums for months on end and not being able to say anything because it affects Activision's financial results.

In a way, Rome has been a victim of its own success. It was originally meant to be a smaller project, although still ambitious, and out on the shelves around now, in fact. But it went down a storm in various places, and the design got a major overhaul to increase the user-friendliness across the board, and provide more player assistance, and so on. That's really where the bulk of the extra time went, or rather, is going.

It's had a lot of upsides though, in terms of code stability (it's pretty rock-like now), improvements to responsiveness and the ai, overhauls of some of the graphics (those damn horses necks & tails, among many other things), sound quality and so on. The game is a lot better for it, and hopefully we'll be able to make up for some of your frustration by delivering a kick-ass demo when the time comes ;-)

Thank you, it all sounds pretty awesome to me. I cannot believe how quick people are to complain You don't get want you want immediately and start moaning, just calm down.

There are people on the Gamesradar forums that believe the code for Half Life wasn't stolen and they are delaying it just to get at them

Take as long as you like with the game, just do it properly...

Jerome, The release date and info in your post is great news.

Looking forward to that Demo because if it's at least as good as the MTW demo then it will keep people busy for months, playing and modding it.
Modding is what really made the MTW demo so here's my vote for a moddable demo please.

Obvious question follows:
When's the Demo going to be out then? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm still busy playing MTW with WesW latest 3.10 release so no rush

Does that mean the "dinosaur-like" necks seen in "Time Commanders" version of the graphics on the BBC? And the synchronised tail-swinging? Will there be other anti-synching built in - the BBC version has almsot every movement in synch, looking like an Army of clones (and would every single Gaul have matching hair and beards? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif)

I'd imagine you hear that rather a lot around the old office. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Thanks for the update, try not to take our grousing too seriously. I am curious just how RTW worked itself from a minor project into a major overhaul though. Is that a reflection of MTW sales, the RTW engine's capabilities, or the reaction from fan and reviewer alike? A combo perhaps? Eh bien, take your time, Rome wasn't built (or programmed) in a day http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

What`s so special about that? I know a certain other game that has been - so to say - nuked back forever

It was probobly made into a big project from a small project because of the major responce they got when they announced it. In every way I'm releaved there is some beutiful roman mods coming out(centurion total war) and most of all another year In my mind will make this game the best game ever if theres only one thing to be scared about is that modding units sounds a hell of alot harder then in Mtw but thats what you get with realism I mean does anyone remember how easy it was to mod Civ 2? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I really didn't expect it to be ready by this christmas, and thats all right. At least I have MTW to hold me- as soon as I finish my current campaign, I'm gonna try WesW's mod, which has somehow escaped my attention until recently.

Of course, now you devs have all the time you need to get it just right. Use it well http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Oh well, "All good things come to those who wait".

Sounds like Rome is shaping up nicely though and we are going to be in for a real treat next year

I guess in the meantime I'll have to settle with Medieval Europe and Feudal japan until then... another year of reconquering familiar ground.

Alot of major games got delayed to 2004.It could worry activisions marketing peeps, becuase all the major games are going to be released in 04(ie Doom3,Half Life2,Deus Ex:IW and Vampire Bloodlines).

GAH

Vanya sez... Gil's words are good news. Best to get the game right before releasing it... and releasing it "when it's ready".

Vanya sez... worry not, folks... in the meantime, youz can play MTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif So, go forth and cut heads off and be happy

Thinking of hell is enough for me, Fearless. Now I'd prefer to play RTW. And to chop some heads, as I see that it starts to become fashionable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Yes Vanya keep choping in the free world but just think in a year you will be cutting totally3d polygonal heads off

Actually it looks to me like the game is in the testing & tweaking period... so to me it looks like a marketing trick by Activision -- and a real stupid one too. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Am I the only one who thinks it amusing that after we beg for the release date (atleast some of us), that when we get it all we do is complain? Sure I would rather have it out by christmas, but atleast we got the release date http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

All we really have seen is the multiplayer battles on Time Commanders and some screenshots (which could be touched up or non working code)

They may still have to add all the campaign stuff and the AI (this could take months)

I could imagine that testing the game this size will be a nightmare.

Also if it was a marketing trick why delay it to next Autumn when they could release at easter ?

Saying that after seeing TC I want the game bad...

The Wizard
10-17-2003, 16:41
Exactly... all these movies, unit/building profiles, TC... why do all that now and then say 'fall next year'? Makes no sense to me...
