I wonder how they geared elephants in RTW if they rout. My thought is if the elephant routs and not the rider they should run in a bunch of different directions and possibly stay on the battle field trampling men (remember both sides would be affected by this). If the rider decides to bagazz out of town then it should be in a more logical manner. I wonder how they will work in the game if elephants become scared or if it will even be put in the game that way

Being easy to panic has always been the Achille's heel of war elephants, so imho this should definitely be in the game.

The riders used to have a spike and a hammer, so if the elephant routed they would drive the spike straight into the brain.

So will they include this option?

Hopefully it will be a balance of both, so some elephants rout and run amuck in your troops and others die as the driver spikes the engine.

thats bad this is worse

I suppose they could not use them against the Parthians as the Cataphacts would chase them away....

When the driver spikes his elephant, what happens when he topples 15 feet to the ground on top of an elephant with devastating force?

Well the hollywood version would have a hero character jump clear at the last moment and then pickup a sword and kill a load of the bad guys,

A more real scenario is the poor blighter would be killed, better to loose one elephant rider then half a phalanx http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

mmmmm of course as elephants did cause havoc amoungst their own troops it would appear that the riders were not always willing to go through with it, I dont think Hannabal would have patted them on the back and said better luck next time to the excuse "err I forgot my hammer"

yes, it would be interesing to see Elephants running around the battlefield routing both armies http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

According the the FAQ at .Com elephants will route.

Thank goodness - as it seems that otherwise they would be a sure battle winner.

What I meant is the idea of uncontrollable, scared elephants running around crazed, straight through both friend and foe http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

its possible they will damage both sides if they route, like if they routed backs on the enemy there is a good chance that it will crush your troops in the process.but if it routed the otherway around its a win win situation.

This is from the Gamestar article:

War Elephants:
Terrific beasts.
Cause armies to cower.
Cannot distinguish enemy from ally

Maybe they will trample down everything rout or no rout http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Not quite.

TO CONFIRM;

When elephants ROUTE - they will trample friend and foe alike - otherwise they will be under control. They are trained you know.

psst.. a Route is something you walk down... j/k http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

and elephants couldn't be trained to be such controlled units as horses could be. As a general using elephants, you could only direct them and hope they would go in that direction and do what you intended them to do, mainly completely rip apart an enemies formation. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

kinda like a heat seaking missle, a fire and forget missle which blows up anything that gives out heat, problem if you are the one glowing on its scensors. D'OH http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Where did I state that they were trained like cavalry horses?

But they WERE trained - otherwise they would have been of NO use. And, historically, they were not decisive in too many battles, probably something to do with their drivers running them into "point head sticks".
