View Full Version : Creative Assembly Curious patch detail...
GAH
Vanya asks... What is the Version.inf file used for? It has little "version" things like compile number, etc.
But, the curious thing that Vanya noticed is there is an entry called LANGUAGE. Vanya checked the current v2 MTW file and the patch file. The original has LANGUAGE=1 and the patch has LANGUAGE=255.
What's up with that? Will this pose a problem? Or is the content of this file not used or is irrelevant?

It's an Activision file... the game couldn't care less about it ;-)

So Activision are sticking useless files in the game now? Ooh. Them's fighting words... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Activision file....hmm....does it have anything to do with the merging of the MTW and VI foyers?
No Aelwyn, the game runs fine without that file. I have tried it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Sorry, I was extremely busy yesterday, and my reply may have accidentally sounded scathing ;-)
The file contains useful information for the Activision support system. It means nothing in game terms. However it does let them establish exactly which version of a game you're running, whether it's been patched, and so forth. You'll find such a file lying around somewhere for every Activision game you have installed.

SO... its NOT used by the game in any way? Its just there in case we call up Activision for something so they can ask us "Uh, open version.inf and tell me the value of xyz field?"? That is, it is not used, for example, to check whether you can join a game in MP? That is, some kind of "version comparison" exchange when you attempt to join a game?
GAH
Oh I understand it has nothing to do with merging the two versions of the game, I was just trying to stir up trouble. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/argue.gif

Exactly... I have more than enough code in there to stop people joining the wrong kind of game, and don't need any help from VERSION.INF.
Delete it and find out.
You're very suspicious, Vanya ;-)

Well... activision could be monitoring us all and if we do something that can't be done to the game according to Activision the SWAT will bust in and the CIA will come in helicopters to take us to Guantanamo... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
