You know when your empire gets too powerful and the other nations would be more against you?
I'm playing the Russians and got to see the good side of it when the Italians went crazy. Wiping out the papacy and having colonies all over the map. They even sank most of my ships and took over my Sweden, my only iron province. Too bad more nations didn't declare war on them, that way they won't be the richest thanks to their trading empire.
Grrr. I'm not sure how to counter them, they are the richest and have the biggest army, they also control the seas. Hopefully the pope will reappear and sack their peninsular. And every Catholic will launch a crusade against them.
On the plus side, I still am in the lead in points. I'm going for a stack of ships and slowly sailing down the baltic into Italy, wiping out their trade. Also I still control the black sea, thanks to the Mongols and Poles who took over Kiev, forcing my ships to remain in the black sea as they are unable to trade and thus avoid the Italians surprised attack.

The best thing you could do is just to build up your economy, and since you dont have the funds you need to prioritize your building of both units and buildings. concentrate on one province at the time, when you have reached your maximum farming-income (could take a while) build up your trade while waiting for the blasphemous pope to return and sink your enemy into the black chasms from whence he came.

Ouch
Losing Sweden hurts http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
Sounds like you have it under cotrol though. If you are pushing their fleet back, that will leave some provinces isolated. Could lead to a few favourable revolts.
Without trade income, what are you doing for money? Russia's farmland is pretty poor. Inquiring minds want to know http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm making a profit of around 1k per year and have ceased all production but ships. Its a good period to upgrade my troops.
With 20 ships in Baltic and the Black Sea I slowly sink the pairs that come near. In about 20 years, The English, Germains, Spanish, Almos and someone else attacked the Italians and took out some of their ships and most importantly stop the trading. The rest of the factions are to the East or have already been eliminated and didn't join the war.
I then sailed into Crete and found it deserted and it found that it has already been developed into a fortress with ship building capabilities. I wonder how much money the Italians have.
The best thing I did was to ally with as many people as possible, I guess the Italians are doomed without their trading. Italians are considered unlikely to take over the world but their ships are just too irritating.
I have it a bit different wich seems to have happened quite a few times. Currently playing as the Kievans with Wesmod and I own all of Northern Europe all the way to what is today eastern France and the Byzantines own all of southern Europe to what is today Eastern France and all the way to Morocco the only thing in the middle of there empire is the Italian penninsula and that holds what is left of Papacy Sicilains and Italians. Funny thing is we are both constantly expanding west with no border disputes and I have no intentions of heading south as this would cutoff the Byzantines expansion to the west and could kill what is going to look like a very fun onslaught
Heres the real kicker I have 12000 troops in Khazar and the Byzantines have decided they want a piece of the Mongol Horde action and have placed 10000 troops in Georgia. Now I have never seen before where the A.I could actually spare this many troops to hold a position this game looks like it is going to have 1 hell of an ending amd I think I am going to save this game permantly

Couldn't make much of a head way as the Italians have more than 2 full stacks in the English Channel. I wonder how many they have after that.

Two full stacks? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
Looks like its going to be a long war. All I can really think of is painfully slow attrition. If their trade is hurting, things should eventually swing your way...how many ship building facilities do they have left?
Has the Italian put his king somewhere you might get a shot at isolating him? If only for a few turns....might get some unrest and turn things your way.

I had that once.. as the Spanish. I had a vast, expansive trading empire, linked to everywhere except the Baltic sea. Problem was it was thinly spread, so when the english attacked, with their much smaller but much more closely spread fleets, they wiped out my fleets, invaded my heartlands and kinda destroyed my vast empire, stretching from the Iberian peninsula, through North Africa, to the Holy lands, Turkey and Constantinople. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
I've never made that mistake again http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Update, only the English, the Germans and I are still at war. The Pope reappeared in Rome but did not get into a war with Italy.
The Italians sailed 3 full stacks, thats 42 ships off Sweden(which I took back). I have 1 full stack of caravels waiting and we fought.
They lost 15 ships I lost 0 and my commander is now a 5 star.
The Italians withdraw and things start looking better now, though another full stack appeared. the Mediterranean appears to be deserted and I'm planning to raid their ship building provinces with mostly sacrificial Slav warriors just in case they cannot get back home.
