I am running both vi and medi and can play both (its great), however last night I did a defrag (1st sense loading both) and defrag attempted to move totalwar files??
I halted defrag and went to see if game would launch, no....ill have to reinstall not a biggie but how to pervent this?

It should be fine for your hard drive to move the Total War files, as it may move them closer to the beginning of the drive and will actually improve performance just a bit. If I were to guess, I'd say the problem came when you halted the process after it had already begun. I think theres a way to stop them from being moved, but I can't remember atm.

I never used defrag on my hdisk since.. hmm.. after they become bigger than 1G.. in my impression the time taken seems infinite.

In my experience defrag is a huge benefit to my pc. Runs much faster and with less problems. I do it once a month, about as often as i bathe http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif As far as taking a long time on larger hard drives, i make sure anyhting that could interrupt it(defrag) is turned off(screen savers, automatic turnoffs, email, and antivirus, anything that comes on automatically) then before bed i turn on defrag. It actually takes my pc about 30 minutes to defrag my 15 gb partition. imho it makes a big difference. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

For my 40 gb hd it takes at least all night to defrag. But I do the same thing, just run it while I sleep. It keeps things clean and running much faster. The longer you go without defragging the choppier it gets. And, depending on how much you add and delete things on your drive, it could eventually cause it to not work anymore. My TW files get moved around I'm sure, since I go through periods of extreme activity followed by large drop offs. As long as I let it finish it always seems to come out ok for me.

I've tried Windows defrag a couple of times, it seems to take much longer than Nortons. Defrag may take a very long time if you're using the computer at the same moment, especially when using messengers.
