choose your unit
Another unit of Praetorians???
Well, give me Macedonians...

Yes, Macedonian pikemen. I know - they are slow, ponderous, don't defend flanks or rear well...but once they get rollin'...holy mama-jama http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Why only 1 choice?? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
I have voted for the lions out of solidarity http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif but actually the first five units are must have, and of course the wild gauls http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Yes, I agree, but another units of Praetorians??? We already have one, isn't that enough?

Oh battlefield philosophers of course What other unit could cause such confusion and disarray amongst both your units and the enemy? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
"Wait a sec, are you saying I don't exist?" *General scratching of foreheads* http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif
Just one of these elite units would eliminate the need for large standing armies and city walls..just send him out to talk to advancing armies until their ears bleed or they fall into a coma from severe mental exertion http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Asterix and Obelix, the Gauls' ultimate unit, only producable once the Romans have conquered all but one of your villages in northwestern Gaul. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
Seriously now, I'd of course want the Elephants and cataphracts to appear, but since I'm not sure they'll appear, I'll vote for the macedonian pikemen, and I also hope we'll have hetairoi cav http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
Leet Eriksson
10-16-2003, 15:47
no asterix and obelix cannot defeat the romans, unless getafix mixes them some magic poitons,so you'll need to invest alot of infastructure in that last village(Magic potion pot requires the production of all the gallic buildings available to the guals). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Obelix does not need the magic potion, he has fallen into it when he was young. BTW, I am sure that there will be a lot of discussion about whether Obelix is an overpowered uberunit or not, shall he get anti-cavalry bonus or not, etc. Anyway, I seriously hope that you can build only one Obelix at a time, otherwise we will see full stacks of Obelix's ramaging across the land. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
Leet Eriksson
10-16-2003, 16:04
oh yeah, then make obelix a one time unit,so once you recruit him thats it you can't recruit him again.

That's bloody brilliant
But Obelix will only attack when provoked (i.e. when some Roman or another calls him fat, or if some Roman or another does something to Ifefix, etc.)
A better choice would be Assurancetourix (at least that's what the bard is called here in ol' Holland), who scares the Romans off with his terrible music http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

No don't let Cacophonix in,his music is so crap Obelix would be demoralised.
Speaking of Asterix,Cleopatra should be in(egyptian super agent, that would put the world in awe and guarantee an immediate Total victory,as Getafix would put it"What a nose"

I think there should be some form of pigeons in the game in going with the general Farmyard: Total War theme of Rome so far (e.g. flaming pigs, dogs etc) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Their stats could include:
Very irritating vs armour (who wants bird poo on their shiny plate mail?)
Vulnerable to missiles (they have tendancy to sit around doing bugger all so you get a good chance to chuck stuff at them)
Very poor morale (they all fly away whenever you charge at them)
Yes, yes, we need flaming pigeons http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Maybe we should just have pigions that fly over the enemy troops and let loose their own payload (like they do to my Car!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
A sure fire way to demoralise those clean-cut Roman troops http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

well armour could be cleaned, what if the guals or other naked barbarians got their payload of pigeon poo?they'll have to take a bath to get rid of it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif hmm
adds another statistic to pigeons:
Gallic units receive -1 turn penalty after getting poo'ed.

Since there will be units that are accurate according to myth, like Wardogs, and units accurate to seperate timeframes, like Egyptian Chariot Archers, I suggest they add Excessively Overpowered English Longbowmen. With perfect accuracy at over 30 kilometers and over 1000 years before their time, they will be both accurate to myth and accurate to another timeframe. While this might imbalance the game a bit, it will be a brilliant marketing move, totally milking the UK market. Think of the money you can make

the praetorians were a bunch of bully boys who only knew which end of pilum was which when the business end was stuck in them by a legionary from the frontiers during the civil wars. I'll take veteran legions any day.

I meant in comparison to praetorians. But in fact, yes even so, if only for versatility. The elephants didn' pose muc htreat to the legions once the initial fear factor was overcome, and the parthian horse archers were only spectacularly effective once against an ill conceived and poorly executed roamn invasion under Crassus.

Don't you mean twice, caitline? The second was when Antony invaded the Parthian lands. His army got royally kicked then too. The Romans usually used the oppurtunity of dynastic squabbles several times to catch the Parthians at weak moments before they made a successful invasion, but apart from that they were a match for the Roman legions, on their own territory of course. There horse heavy armies were best suited to the gently rolling hills and deserts of their homeland as they found in Syria and Armenia.

actually, taking another look at the poll list, I can see the merits of Battlefield Philosophers.
Kato flanks the mighty Greek agnosticist phalanx, while Plinius tries to establish a foothold on a nearby hill. Right on time comes Plato and his Raving Lovers and with a determined attack drive the Romans back, while Diogenes tackles the flanking effort and Socrates, an army of one-man truly, sweeps the ranks of the unlucky Romans, joined by the determined Stoics...
