I am really not that fussed if, when Rome Total War comes out I never ever play the Roman faction. I really couldn't give a monkeys. I don't know what all the palaver is about.
Elephants? War Dogs? I'll have some of that. Legions? Pah.

And another thing, this rather daft crusade for historical accuracy is getting old now, you play a game, you don't play history, if you got everything historically accurate there would be no game, you would go and read a book, you would have no direct control over your troops, you would need flags and a silly 15 minute delay over starting a charge, there would be no speed time up button, there would be no popping to the loo to have a wee in the middle of a dramatic battle.
CA have not made a bad game, let them do their job, I think they do it rather well.

People don't want history, they want historical units. There is a world of difference.

But a lot of the problem is that CA says they will create a game that is historically based. If they had said something like "we will create a game that draws some inspiration from the Roman Republic" Then we couldn't nag about historical accuracy, for they would only be creating a game that takes some aspects from Rome. But as it is now they have told us that they will try to keep it as historical as possible, and so far it doesn't look good in that department. Personally I'm rather sure it will get better soon... or at some point... yeah... sure, that is what I am... I think I am. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

I think when it comes out, those who don't care about reality will be too busy having fun to realize how much history they're absorbing, and those who do care will be too caught up in the feel of it to worry too much about a few barbarians with axes.

And then there will also be the option to mod it?

YES And with the info that it will be heavily modable, I'm greatly pleased. But I will most likely not mod much.

Heh heh, Having read my post again the following morning it sounds just like a 12 year old having a rant, sorry about that, part of the problem is the lack of emotion that typing can bring http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif .

Thanks for that LongJohn, I agree I think people will be far to busy enjoying themselves to notice that a particular barbarian should have carried a spatula instead of an egg whisk or something.

As Kraxis says, just mod the game, people not happy with the way Medieval plays are more than a bit chuffed at how the WesW mod plays.

edit- spelling imp strikes again

One doesn't necessarily have to do that himself, there are many dedicated modders. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

And they could be even more without localized-only CDs.

Konnichiwa,

Localized software. I understand the benefits for certain programs, educational software and even (interactive) games for kids. But how much benefit is there to have TW localized? Seems to me that localisation only adds headache in case a patch has to be made and indeed in case of mods.

Localization is necessary for non-English speakers, but -as you say- is a huge headache for modders. For example, if I wanted to carry on my mod project with the Italian-only edition of VI and distribute it to a international public I should:

- Deal with non-standard file locations (Loc/Italian instead of Loc/English) and other possible differences (do all versions have a changes.txt file ?).

- Undo changes applied by translators (for example the names of the Italian heros in Italian MTW are different from the ones in the English edition - some are more accurate and some are made up, go figure).

- Repair errors in the localized files, ie the inquisitors shouldn't begin their phrases with รง#@$, and princess Urucca Don't Translate should have a more agreable name. Also, how do I know if some "features" (Papal envoys with english names) are there by design or just translation errors?

- Retranslate back to English all the text snippets in all the txt files, some of which have become incomprehensible (or in a case vaguely obscene http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif) in the translation. This includes unit names and descriptions, which I would have to research myself.

- Hope that all these changes (plus the mod itself) work on a regular English install, which I don't have.

So, basically I would like the RTW CD to come with both languages (the local language and English), and ask me which one I want. This would make life WAY easier for modders, and conceivably make a number of other people happy (expats, embassy staff and so on). Or at least make sure that multilanguage patches can be used to switch the game language (and release one immediately http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif)... this "feature" worked in IT-MTW, but is hopelessly broken in IT-VI http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

While on the topic i have to observe that the TW series lack totally a Hellenic Localisation http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
It was ok for medieval cause the era and the byzantines werent 100% greeks BUT now with rome the Greeks take maijor stage with ptolemies egypt the succesor kingdoms and the greek league.
I just hope that the game will be localised in greek so it will give more realistic feeling to the era and thus add to the gameplay=eye-candy,marketing. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

A localized manual, pilum instead of spear and hoplites shouting Greek (?) orders for the realistic feeling, but things like localizing End Turn, BlackSmith, Woods and the like?

What would you prefer? A localized interface or easier modding/better patches?

No basicly i would like a full localisation like Loc/eng file but Loc/gre file like all the other languages...the hoplites shouting inAncient greek would be cool but a full localisation would bring the game closer to the southern population of balkans ie greeks... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
