Raphia

The year is 217 BC. The place is Raphia, near Gaza. Two nearly identical armies led by the heirs of Alexander The Great fight to control the border territories that separate their rival kingdoms.

From a hi-tech war-room which resembles a modern military command and control centre, a team of celebrities take control of the army of Ptolemy IV of Egypt against the forces of the Seleucid Kingdom in the East. Al Murray (the Pub Landlord) and Kate Silverton (co-presenter of The Politics Show) are the team's Generals; Ricky Groves (Garry in Eastenders) and Raji James (Ash in Eastenders) are their lieutenants.

Using real-time computer graphics, the team are in charge of an army of 68,000 men and 73 war elephants, but will they know how to use them? And will Al and Kate maintain control of their forces, or will their lieutenants take charge?

Watching the team's every move are two military experts. From their vantage point above the war-room, they assess the team's command structure, their communication and tactical skills, and compare their performance to what happened at the real battle of Raphia more than 2000 years ago.

Presented by Eddie Mair.

This should be an interesting one.

I wonder what culture these armies will be

Ptolemy IV of Egypt - my guess Egyptian

forces of the Seleucid Kingdom - Greek or Eastern ?
- at a guess eastern.

A bit like the Armenians perhaps? We saw some cataphracts and pikes in that battle.

I just love those pictures of armies If I do get to write some stories about TW here, that'll help a lot...
