I sugegst that a page spent on newbees on thsi site, very visible at the frontpage would serve us all.
On that page info should be collected for them like
latest patch
how to ignore
limitation of rankingsystem
rules on this board
and so on
just to tie the newbies onto our community
what do teh moderators think about this.
As sub-newbie i would really like that http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
Binding newbies to a place is a two-way thing indeed... where attention and respect stands central imo

i think it is a great idea and it would be brilliant if all newbies read it but sorry to put in a bad word but i really dont think new players are going to bother reading it! . . if it is long i know i wouldnt bother reading it i would want to get straight into the action and kick butt! . .aslong as it aint 15 pages long + tera!!!!! i think it may have a chance . . say 10% of newbies reading it! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Jag's right - but what it does mean is if any of the covered question's come up - we only need to say "refer to this guide/page" in response.

not long ago, i asked anssi if the forum code was capable of supporting a fixed, read only thread. it would be fixed in that it would remain as the first thread in each forum. it would be read only to everyone except the admins. the admins could add or delete anything they wanted, including write-ups from players. this could serve as a general help topic, or a current news topic, or a faq thread.
anssi wasnt sure the current code could handle this and that if it did it might take a good deal of study to figure out how to do it. he also suggested that there is at least one upgrade that could be made to the .org forums that might also allow for this. he also cited the use of the alert/news item that appears every once in a while in the upper left corner of a forum.
the upshot here is that anssi wasnt quite sure what, if anything, could be done. perhaps one of you knows how info pop code is done and if this is indeed feasible and could actually do it. i believe i also saw somewhere that if the .org were to do an upgrade of the forum stuff to the next version that there would be a high risk of losing everything currently posted.
my reason for inquiring about this was seeing several recent posts that were simply repeats of earlier questions or answers and it seemed somewhat redundant to be always answering the same thing.
i also inquired about the ability to move a current thread into another thread, combine the two into one thread. the recent multiple threads about the new battle recorder seemed quite ...odd... to me. erado posts a thread about a new battle recorder feature and folks ask questions and other folks answer in that one thread and then someone else starts a new thread on the same topic, and then someone else starts yet another one, and in a few cases, the answers already existed in the first thread...messy.
one thing anssi noted was that in the tech support thread, erado has a standard reply to some questions and this is in the form of, 'see my tech site'. erado's site functions in a similar way as a faq page or thread. perhaps someone else could do a standard 'newbie site'. we could all then just direct folks to that site for answers.
i also asked anssi about another feature in bbs type forums. ezboard uses this, as so some of the others. in the .org forums one starts a thread and it's one successive post after another....straight line. what might be nice would be a file tree system of posts. playerA posts a message and then playerB posts another and so on. it might be nice to have the cabability to be able to reply to playerA's post directly under his post and then access it in the same way. thus, a given topic might vere this way and that but one could reply more directly to the part he or she wanted to.
just some thoughts.
K.

The only absolute is that there are no absolutes.
Well,
What I want to do is just a rough guide for the general newbie to understand what we mean by 'honourable', the honour system, chatroom commands and other things that are worth to know by the newbie.
Better than nothing.
Btw, Krae, on ezboard 'gold' CSC forums there is a "sticky" topic feature which sticks a topic to be always at the top...

ORGANIZATION
Why can't you update the strategy section of the forum to contain the hard data you want to discuss, and a new-user forum for the place to discuss the data. You can refer to the data, paste it, or provide links to it if your off-site.
The following are some of the types of info I used to relay, whenever I got asked. It is old info, and only intended for giving you some ideas.
GAME FEATURES INFO
This is intended as begining source of referrance, for those who may not be entirely familliar with the games features.
Battle logs tell you about units honor and performance.
Custom battles lets you test, and design armies.
The smaller flags on units tells you their honor.
The zen coins on unit icons shows their fatigue status.
Your general is the first unit you buy.
General gives nearby units morale bonus, unless routing.
General dying subtracts morale, so more from nearby units.
Archers can cause freindly fire, guns dont.
Archers in 3rd or more ranks take an accuracy penalty.
Guns in 3 ranks rotate and fire one rank at a time.
Guns in 2 ranks fire both ranks at once.
Hold Position keeps missile units from being lured forward.
Hold fire lets you conserve ammo, and target your archers.
Hold Alt then clik target to make missile units melee attack.
Missiles start in skirmish formation, so wont stand ground.
Hold Formation raises Ashi's morale, improves them vs. cavalry.
Units in Loose Formation lose morale and effectiveness.
Units in Wedge Formation get melee attack bonus.
Units fighting against a Wedge get the same attack bonus.
Yari armed units get attack bonus against cavalry.
All units get attack bonus against cavalry in woods.
Units attacking an enemys flank get an attack bonus.
Units attacking an enemys rear get a larger attack bonus.
Units with friends on either flank gain a morale bonus.
Units with enemy in their rear lose morale.
Units with nearby routing enemy gains morale.
Units with nearby routing friends loses morale with each unit.
Hold Alt then clik ground to keep units facing unchanged.
Select unit, hold Ctrl, then select another unit to select both.
Hold Ctrl-Shift-(1 thru 9) to hotkey selected units.
Recall hotkeyed 'Division' with Ctrl-(1 thru 9).
'Stacked' movement orders when withdrawing from the enemy is one of the main causes of the 'Rout-Bug'.
Grouped units will run "very quickly", and may tire faster. When moving a group without using Alt-Left clik, or reversing the groups direction, or using Clik-and-drag to reform the group; the groups units may march quickly to maintain its formation or switch positions by marching thru each other at a quick rate. So you may want to group and ungroup to perform some of these manuevers or use the Alt features to move the group. The Alt-Right clik feature will still require a group to switch places before it begins to move in its new direction, if you attempt to reverse direction in that manner, whereas the Alt-Left clik feature would keep your same facing and would not require a switch before the group moves. If the enemy is behind you and you want to about face, you might want to ungroup in that circumstance.
OTHER PEOPLES COMMENTS
One thing to add: Ctrl-W makes your troops make an orderly withdrawl from the field. They march quickly. Unlike Rout, this command can be canceled at will, having nothing to do with the general proximity to the withdrawing unit.
ctrl+left mouse creates a dragbox ala Command and Conquer allowing you to select units by geographical location on the battlefield rather than unit types or slecting them individually.
And using the group button (or 'G' on the keyboard) allows you to wheel groups of units without losing formation.
If you have multiple units selected then use alt rgt click to change their facings they will all puvot around their individual centres to face the selected point. This can break up or change the shape of the formatiton. once the units are grouped together using alt rgt click will change the facing of the group as a whole, wheeling on it's centre rather than units individual centres
Is this also true when the archers are in loose formation? I always put them in two rows but read somewhere that in loose formation only rank 4 and more take a penalty.
Actually, archers in more than a row of 2 men deep, make more friendly fire kills.
And...muskets should be kept on close formation. There are some other tips like Wedge formation troops move faster etc.

GAH! A true newbie would be unaware of the very Existenz of the Org. What hope have they but to fart in your general direction when in the overcrowded EA foyer in the hopes that somebody, somewhere, will pick up on their faint scent and graciously invite them over for diner... where they will feed on the newbie's liver over some fava beans and a nice Chianti...
http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif
not my duty to do that.
Also, the guide I'm making is just an overview for a common newbie on how to play online, nothing special.
Vanya, every site/preview/reviews that relates to Shogun quite always mentions das org...

OK... My re-engineered definition of a newbie: A player who lacks all of the Vanya maps.
Have Vanya maps --> vet.
Have Vanya maps not --> newbie.
Period.
