It's a problem with cookies. This may occur when entering some forums too.

My time rarely permits me to play online anymore, but anyway, if I'll enter the foyer this weekend it will be under the name of Nowake.

Hi Baz,

I have same problem, if it occurs again, juggle between accounts and also re-type passwords.

Hmm, I may also check the cookie thing.

Thanks.

Hello Baz,Ive posted on this before here,Im not sure how it works, but it can get you in the game foyer when you have the constant 'logging in' problem.
Click multiplayer, then from the next screen leave the 'use existing connection' box unchecked, proceed to connect....
You have the logging in messageuse the go back tab, select the 'use existing connection' box then go to the connect screen.Press your return key a few times as you click on 'connect' and you should be able to log on.Kansuke,I know still has problems even though he does this procedure, but I know of many people that this method has helped-myself included.
Good Luck

Baz, if you have any anti-virus programs running (espcially norton anti-virus) turn off auto-protect, then log in, et voila http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

something that always works for me: Unclick 'remember my password' on the name screen... if that doesn't work restarting your computer helps http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hola,

Would it make a difference if I got my Disk 1's mixed up?

Osis
04-20-2004, 02:55
Hmmm,

Switched CD's and have the same thing.

Created new account and username, clan and family name. Same thing.

Could it be related to my Cable Modem & Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable / DSL Router?

Perhap's I could forward ports to my IP? Dunno just guessing here, but I'm determined to get it working.

Hello Osis,

About the disks:
Original STW has two disks, it certainly matters which disk is used. I recall that the game won't start at all if the wrong one is inserted, so you won't get to the logging screen at all.

STW WE/MI has only one disk, so you can't go wrong there.

Routers and (software) firewalls are definately a pain with all TW titles, wrong configured ones are even a pain with any program.

You need a port to communicate with the foyer, a port to play games and your computer has to be visible when you will play one.

I remember that you mentioned removing the router, which still didn't allow you to login. Perhaps you have a software firewall running? Windows XP has one that runs by default IIRC.

Hi,

Well, this logging in problem is strange, I get it to on my home laptop, it hangs on "logging on", the only way I get in is wait upto 10seconds and try again, sometimes it can take upto 10-15 mins of trying, sometimes I get in second third attempt.

Whereas, the PC at my parents, I get in straight away and I cant really see any settings that are different from the 2 pc's
(both laptops);

Concise specs as follows:

Mum's Mine
XP XP
2.8GHZ 3.06GHZ HT
256RAM 512RAM
30GB HDD 80GB HDD
LOG IN FAST LOG IN VERY HARD and SLOW

it really puzzles me and thats even if I use ADSL with my PC. Maybe its pc's with large HDD, so partitioning or something may do the trick ie haveing stw/mi in small confined area on its own.

Quote[/b] (TosaInu @ April 20 2004,05:08)]STW WE/MI has only one disk, so you can't go wrong there.
To clarify, I have two copies of STW:WE. My son and I play on our home LAN. But he has misplaced the jewel case with the code on it and had left the Disk 1 CD in the CD-ROM.

I thought perhap's Disk 1 of 2 that I have with both my versions of STW:WE had been put back in the wrong jewel cases and was causing my issue. I think MI is one additional disk, but WE is the original game STW, plus MI.

I switched them and it made no difference.

Created four different accounts and tried logging in with all of them with no luck.

Will setup DMZ Host and see if that makes any difference, probably won't since I already tried removing my Router and going direct.

Something else is going on here, not sure what yet, but I will figure it out sooner or later.

Hello Osis,

It may be the case that the CD-Key of disk 2 won't work with Disk 1. But that is quite unlikely. The CD's are normally all identical, there are a load of different keys that work on the same lock.

Which operating system are you using?

And to add another item to the anomaly list:

I had installed a software firewall. It was disabled to startup with Windows, so I wouldn't have the firewall running. I could not logon to STW WE. The fix was that I had to start the firewall manually and then turn it off again. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Kansuke, Hyper Threading might be a reason. I could logon to STW WE using the Pentium4, but had serious problems when HT was enabled in the BIOS. Coincidence? It's reported that some programs don't like HT very much.

Ah, Thanks Tosa.

I'll try it tonight and see what happens.

Kansuke.

err, How do I open Bios?

TosaInu
04-20-2004, 16:57
Kansuke,

You're going to mess around with hardware and software. Make sure you have a backup of important files and keep your windows XP install CD at hand. It can be a painless 1,2,3 or an hours long exercise.

I'm not sure whether there are other ways than just the BIOS (a Windows tweak utility?), the BIOS can be accessed by booting the computer and pressing and holding a certain key (the bootmenu may tell which). This is often DEL, sometimes a Function key, your Motherboard manual will tell.

HT can be in Advanced/CPU configuration, disable it. Save and Exit, the computer will reboot and Windows will start. The computer will then detect new hardware (HT fakes 2 processors and you have only one now). It will be a matter of a few minutes now as Windows is reconfiguring itself, may need the CD there.

Good luck.

Hi all,

I just logged on to Shogun/WE at the first attempt.
No problem.
Tried again and still the same result...logged on straight away.
So it seems there is not a Server problem (tongue in cheek)

Kansuke

With my PC I have to bootup and hold down the F1 key as soon as blue screen appears to get to BIOS.
I have a Hewlett Packard.

As Tosa says, different systems have different ways to access BIOS.

Good Luck

Hmmm,

Do Not Mess with your BIOS unless you know what your doing.

You can run any game in 98 mode by right clicking the exe and this will disable HT.

Had to do this with Panzer Elite, otherwise it was like driving the Tank on speed (not that I know what that is like).

Will test and report back.

Hello Osis,

Which game STW or STW WE/MI?

I have STW:WE

This is a new copy, the previous copy I lost the jewel case, although I still have the CD. I bought a new copy, could it be that my nickname is registered to the old code on the old jewel case?

I made a new persona, that didn't work, so I think it's something else. I even did a complete fresh installation and nada.

Patched to v1.02 and running WinXP.

Dell Dimension XPS
Intel P4-3.4 Ghz
2 Gig's PC3500 Dual Channel RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro
Audigy2
LinkSys Router (although I uplugged and went raw and still didn't work).

Just stay's at the Logging On screen. MTW:VI works fine.

Hola,

Disabled HT and it made no difference. I think this is an XP issue, installed on a 98 & ME machines and it works fine.

XP firewall's are disabled.

Wonder if it has something to do the TCP/IP stack?

Does anyone know the IP address for the STW:WE server? I want to run a tracert.

Osis
04-21-2004, 21:16
So what does everyone think?

Is the easy solution to create a partition and put 98SE on it for STW:WE then do a dual boot?

Or can this thing be solved?

Kansuke
04-21-2004, 23:34
Hi Osis,

It can't be an XP issue, as get in fine on my Mum's xp pc.

But a partition thing might work.

Also, when I try to logg in, I have noticed that I get in quicker if i have othe programs running.

TosaInu

Internet.cfg

ChatserverIPAddress = daphne.eagames.co.uk
ChatserverPort = 8794
NewsserverIPAddress = daphne.eagames.co.uk
NewsserverPort = 8797
ShogunTotalWarWebsite = www.totalwar.com

I do recall that XP causes extra issues, it doesn't make it impossible though.

You could try to make a shortcut to the exe and apply Win98/95 compatibility in the properties.

Logging in is faster when you have other programs running Kansuke?

Kansuke
04-22-2004, 10:52
Hi Tosa,

Yeah, its strange, but its the only way I get in.

I am not a pc expert or on the HT issue, but I have a theory that the HT somehow gets into a loop of sorts when just dealing with one application, it thinks its 2 proceccors, so its trying to do the same task, however, if I leave my browser on, and search for a file which doesn't exist, I try to logg in and believe it or not get in a few attempts.

Just a nooby theory, but works for me.

That's one thing I hate about PC's in general.
You find a solution, the problem disappears and you
have no idea what the heck was going on in the first place.
This always drives me mad cause I wanna know the reason.

Hola,

Had a nice little chat online with my 98SE machine on Sunday, had detailed instructions given to me to try.

Found that with a WAN MiniPort PTPP (VPN) connection setup on my machine for work related items, leaving the Data Connection method uncheck created a Dialup Adapter not found error message.

So I deleted the PTPP connection and then could get past the error message. However even following the very detailed instructions given to me I still hang at the Logging On.... message.

I ran through all methods described above and will take another look when I have a few moments tonight.

Still trying, it's crazy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

On a related issue to the "logging in" problem (which I'm suffering with) I've just realised something: on both the accounts I've made I never got the "confirmation link" e-mail from EA when I signed up.

Can anyone help me out here? I don't know why I'm not getting the e-mail, as I still get other e-mails I'm sent. I really want to be able to turn up on the Shogun MP scene and get thrashed. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hola,

More information, more than strange aswell. My PIII-850 with 98SE & XP Pro in dual boot did connect with STW:WE to the lobby today. This was with XP Pro.

So now I turned back to my other faster machine and found this odd behaviour. With CD Key and no Login information posted what so ever, I still sit at the Logging On... prompt.

No error message, which I find more than strange. So I've deleted my VPN connection and will do a fresh installation of the program. See at least if I can get it to complain that I have not entered the CD Key http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

setup compatability to win98 - no luck logging in,

then went into bios and changed processor setup
disabled hyper threading the the login trauma went away

i still get my age old bug of getting disconn at end of battle,
but the game logs in and i have yet to notice any real slowdown in overall system speed.

if i need hyperthreading i can always switch it back on later

You would think they could easily fix this with a patch.
