While online with some relatively new players last night it was brought to my attention that the EA server for Shogun Total War/Mongol Invasion will not be available after February, 12th, 2004. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
Here is the exact text that is on the box of the game:
"*Online gameplay for Shogun: Total War Warlord Edition will be available only through 2/12/04 subject to online terms of use and all features may not be available at the time of purchase. Please check online at www.totalwar.com for more information and terms of use."
I thought this information should be posted here. This is a big disappoint for me personally, but I guess it's to be expected considering how long the game has been out. Well, all the more reason to get in some good game time beforehand ... . I will miss the good cyberfriends I've made online more than I will miss the battles. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Ironic that the date is the anniversary of my mother's death--she was the only member of the Japanese side of my family to come to the US. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

Heh I’m glad you’re using my term http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Well I’m hoping that the server for MI has been long forgotten and is currently building cobwebs in a lonely corner of EA, so it will not be closed down
However in the event that it does close down, not so long ago 'Tosa' (I can’t remember... I think it was 'Tosa'http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif hosted up a kind of 'temporary server' so to speak and we all played on that for a while. Perhaps if we are very lucky, he would be willing to do it again

Hardcoded, shielded, tucked away ...
but there's RSW.

Sad news indeed, if this is the case. I have been struggling with my pc trying to get shogun playing again.
Can't seem to finish a game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
So I won't have long now to get it sorted.
TenkiPanda, you are refering to 'Fakeserver'
This was set up when EA was not very stable I think.

No 'Jochi Khan', 'Tosa' hosted up a server, I can't remember the reason though.

Konnichiwa,
I used RSW's Fakeserver to run the Foyer on my Desktop. I have ADSL, so I can afford to keep it up for a while.
It was running as the EA server had severe problems back then.

Yes we were all grateful for your generosity Tosa ( the host for fakeserver has to keep it open ) but I don't think we have a reliable way around this, unfortunately.
There has been no announcement to my knowledge so much of this is speculation.
If it is true I think we will lose something very special

Ok I just looked all over the MI CD Box.....I have no such statement on mine. Is it the box or the manual? Heh I'll check that too brb...........
Nope, nothing in the manual either....
......Orda
On boxes for sale now I think.
I've a friend with a proffesional fast server...can someone explain to me what it needs to run a permanent MI server, and how many can use that server same time?
I'm a technical noob, each day I'm amazed my pc is still working http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Info plz

Perhaps the message is only on STW/MI game boxes that have been recently released? The person who informed me was reading the statement from the box of the game he'd recently purchased (the discounted "Bargain Bin" version, without a manual, etc.). Another in the foyer confirmed that his box said the same thing.
I hope indeed that this "speculation" is false.

If this information is on the boxes that are now being purchased then it is obvious that EA are covering their backs.
At the time that EA was having severe problems ( as Tosa says ) I was one of the many players whose names were deleted from the data base, meaning I was unable to log on at all.
There was talk then about the legallity of selling a game that stated ...ability to play online with other players... but not actually being able to. This was against the Trades Discription Act.

Konnichiwa,
Fakeserver is a tiny program. I should experiment a bit and look a little closer, but it doesn't seem a resource eater. I'm running it on Win98SE. Any Windows server should do. I recall that there were up to 12 players. I don't know the limit, as there weren't that many active players and the server was still running when I was sleeping.

Maybe a rotary system?
I mean there must be some Americans out there who are willing to donate a little of their 10 - 20 Mbps connections?
European wise i'm looking straight at Anskare with his mammoth 10Mpbs (Down speed).

Those 10-20Mbps are usually T1's in our offices where we are using the internet with the full knowledge and permission of our boss ( http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ). At home, we have to make do with a mere 1.5Mbps on cable or ADSL. Cable claims to hit the higher speeds, but high usage clogs the stream and brings everyone's speed down (filesharing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )
Maybe when it is verified whether of not EA is really going to force the STW server to commit Sepukku, the Org could organize an effort to locate someone capable of hosting a semi-permanent server.
TenkiSoratoti
10-23-2003, 19:44
I see well that explains the fact that a friend of mine in America who knows nothing about computers (no business) has a 10 Mbps connection? Odd that.
Mere 1.5Mbps connection? I made do with 26.4k for 2 years while I took a mocking from those with 600k.

I have just finished a live chat with a sales representative from Art of War Central (a host of more than a dozen multiplayer games) who have agreed to look into the feasibility of hosting and perhaps test the game from servers in Dallas, TX. They seemed genuinely eager to assist the Shogun Community. I'll let you of know any future developments...

Positive newsGood,Im sure that whatever happens with the EA server, the dedicated community will find a wayThere has never been a community like the STW one in my opinion, not one that keeps so many people involved and engrossed...we shall overcome
Question...How many times have you played on totomi, same set up points, similar armies, often too the same opponents,...see what I mean http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif you cant stop playing once you're hooked

Can anyone tell m if the Shopgun server is down now....cos whenever i try and connect it says "failed to connect" is this just me or is everyone having the same problem?
(Ah just read the bits befor....do you reckon a petition to EA might persuade them to change their minds, as we are the game playing public...)
Quote[/b] (Chimpyang @ Jan. 20 2004,17:54)]do you reckon a petition to EA might persuade them to change their minds, as we are the game playing public...
If I understand it correctly, EA has flogged the rights to the game to some "Budget PC Classics" company. So EA is not interested in us anymore, because they are not going to make money out of it.
What I want to know is whether that idea to interest a third party into setting up a Shogun server has come to something or not. Somewhere back in the thread ShinKamiizumi talked about it.

Yes, you need an original shogun cd-key. I believe Kas said he has an extra copy, ask him for the extra cd-key.
Hey all. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I hate this topic, as it creates the wrong impression. It now appears evident that the talk of the server closing was just rumours/mis-information, without any official foundation.

Gee m8, that's a little harsh isn't it? Why does it bug you??
I started the topic out of concern for the Shogun community, and my concern was founded on documentation that was written on the Shogun game box.--quoted in the first post. I had hoped something could be done to forestall the stated closure date seomwhow, or find a way to set up another server.
I am glad that the server is still up, just like the rest of the Shogun die-hards. That's all that matters really. Let's hope it stays up.

Hi,
When the topic matter was relevant, it was was ok, it had to be mentioned, as it is now redundant, I loathe to see it pushed to the fore front, unless you have good reason for it to be so?
Nothing personal, just the topic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-yes.gif
BTW Folks, STW/MI SERVER is running nicely, was continiously active througout the day.
Argh I will have to post in another topic to push it down now, lol.
