View Full Version : Is there a way to edit stacks?

My question basically is:
Is there any way to change the size of stacks so you can fit more men into one "stack". Currently I think the stack size is 960 but I edited my game to have Double-Size units. It gets annoying moving around tons of stacks all over the place, so I was wondering if anyone knew a way to make them bigger?
I have been wondering about this as well. I can't recall if I have run across the setting for this, or not. The limit on unit sizes is set at 100 because the game can't handle more than 200 in a unit, which is what you get with Huge unit sizes. 960 comes in at about 2000 on Huge units, so this might be the limit that the game can handle for an entire stack, for some reason.
You could also search the MTW folder for "960" and see if you get a hit.

A bit troublesome solution, but the only one I know:
1)Edit all units in "crusaders_unit_prod11.txt" so that none will be affected by using the ingame option to change unit sizes. It should be fairly easy (but somewhat timeconsuming) using the Gnome editor, just swap a "yes" with a "no" or something like that for most units. I don't have the editor myself anymore so I'm afraid I can't point you to the correct column.
2)Start the game and go to "options" and change unit sizes from Default to Huge.
Your units will now be unaffected by the change to Huge units setting, but your stack should now be able to contain 120x16=1920 men instead of the earlier 60x16=960.
I believe that was all. Hope it helps.

Yeah the reason I don't play on Huge is because it hurts the AI.
If you play on Huge, every unit takes 2 turns to train. This makes Re-Training quite the priority, and the AI never retrains guys.
Sooooo, I edited it so everything is DoubleSized in Normal mode.

No. Not if you make the unit unaffected by changing from normal to huge unit sizes.
Try this:
1) Find the unit Peasants in "units_build.txt" and make them size 200. (You have already done that it seems)
2) Find the "YES" after the aplicable periods: "ALL_PERIODS" and change it to "NO".
Now changing to Huge unit size ingame will not affect this unit in any way, INCLUDING training time.
3) Fire up a new campaign with Huge units. Build a unit of peasants. You will find that size is 200 and building-time remain 1 year, while the stack can take 1920 men.
Sorry if i was unclear in my first post

Yeah sorry about that.
Thanks for the help http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the whole idea of taking two years to train double sized units is because you are training (and equipping) twice as many men.
I've only had the game less than two months now, (I've played Shogun for two years) and even though the extra strategy perks make the game more fun in a way it's way too easy to beat as it is. I remember in Shogun the AI would have one Daimyo win out on his side of the island and if you weren't up to snuff (and a really decent defender) you'd be swamped with wave after wave of incessant attacks until you managed to achieve a breakthrough or the faction leader died (or was assasinated) or you were defeated and committed sepuku. Of course I was mostly too proud to resort to anything like amphibious invasion in the game because the enemy never did and it just didn't seem like bushido to me.
No, I like using huge armies and don't resent the extra wait because I plan for it. And I love retraining centers Gimme two provinces like Navarre and Aragon with iron ore and I'll make four provinces churn out the units fully armored for retraining to get the best weapons, twenty years ahead of the AI if not more.

Just a warning for anybody using the solution posted above:
Making units unaffected by the ingame unit-size togle will only work when playing campaign.
Somehow this is not taken into consideration when loading custom battles.
The result is that if you have units with 200 men, they will become 400 men in custom battle when playing with Huge unit setting - thus causing CTD (no unit can be larger than 200 men).
So, to play custom battles, change huge unit setting back to default.
