You have to first be granted the right of passage by moving into that faction's territory before you can use their fleet... But it does work for you as well I think.

It does indeed. Both you and the AI can use allied fleets as long as you're allowed passage through their lands and the province has a port. In fact you have to take the quickest route, you're not allowed to tour round picking up people on the way - sometimes anoying if there are some provinces with high zeal. I used that fact to my advantage when the AI was crusading. I had some high zeal provinces (around 75-80%) and would have lost a load of good units but I shifted some ships and they only got to go through one of my provinces before leaping straight to the province next to their target.

You can be at war with them and use there ships http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I guess it was only because I gave them the right of passage since that big crusade was'nt out to get me

Not sure if it's always a good idea though - any time I've used allied shipping, I've never been able to sail the crusade further than a Byzantine-controlled province, and so far they've refused entry to my crusade every time - whereas the land-borne crusades they usually seem ok with http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Is it just me, or are the Byzantine's totally uber as AI controlled in early now? - I never like to be at war with them until I've gotten seriously developed now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
