quoting myself like usaul i read the other day that 300 spartan hoplites managed to defeat a persian army of 11,000 men so if i was playing RTW i would just build a million SPARTAN HOPLITES and snap everyone and everything.

That was Thermopylae, and Xerxes' 70,000 man army was held up by some 10,000 Greeks with 300 very elite Spartans in their ranks... they held them off for a few days, but a Greek traitor told Xerxes of another passage, and the remaining Greeks and Spartans got swamped from two sides.

I don't see what's wrong with super elite units, they existed in real life. Having Achilles or Hector out there single handedly routing armies with just a nasty glance would be a bit much, but there's nothing wrong with having Varangian Guard quality units in game as stalwarts to bulk up a part of a line to face an pressed attack, exploit a weakness in the enemy's force, or to make a heroic last stand.

One of the coolest moments I've experienced was having El Cid defend Barcelona castle from an assault of Moors with 20 times the number of his men. His knights were slaughtered to the last man, but they sent over 80% of the of the Moors to Allah while holding the inner gate.

If there are no legendary soldiers and elite units like that, the game loses some of it's magic.
