View Full Version : Snow in Cornwall
well i dont live in England but i would guess it doesnt snow alot in southwest england. it did in VI though. very cool, my first snow battle. i think it effects fatigue cuz my guys seemed to tire quicker than normal, also slows movement? anyone know other effects? i was surprised that enemy seemed able to use archers effectively in blinding snow since they dont work in rain. interesting battle with rebels, we are about even strength and they're hiding in hills, i coax them down and beat'em up pretty good but my gen gets killed by an errant shot, my guys waver but hold on and about have it done when their gen shows up with 60 huscarles (i'm irish so dont have any). they plow through several of my units and then, fatigued with gen dead, all my guys cut and run even though there's only 25 of enemy left. finally, a couple of my units rally after running halfway across battlefield and enemy also fatigued from chasing us and the victory is won, quite costly though.

You'd be surprised Our weather is constantly changing and rather unpredictable. That's why we are so famous for being obsessed with the weather It always gets on the news when snow hits the SE because London is down there and the BBC seem to think we all want to know when anything happens in London. I see an average of several snow reports on the SE each year.
Anyway in MTW snow tires out men in heavy armour at a fast pace even if they are doing nothing, all lighter equipped units tire out faster than normal but not quite as fast as the armoured guys. Cavalry become less effective. Bow strings get damp and gunpowder fires at a reduced rate or doesn't fire at all if there is any snow falling, even if it is only a couple of snowflakes. Ranged weapon accuracy, and I think range, is also reduced. If there is a massive blizzard going on visibility is reduced and it is easier to pull off ambushes. I think that is the full list.

So basically the blizzards bugger up pretty much every type of unit, just to different extents :/
Surely desert units like Nubians would be rubbish in a blizzard due to their topless nature? :P
Anyone know if thats reflected in the game?

As far as the Nubians; no reduced effectiveness in my experience, but if you look closely, you'll notice that their nipples become quite hard.
I have noticed that on my Berserkers and Celtic Warriors too. Are they related to the Nubians.
In case you didn't figure it out, you only get to battle in snow if you fight 4 or more battles in a turn.
The reason armoured units fatigue so easily is the cold air penetrates steel armour with haste making the warrior very cold also Who wants to fight when they are freezing there butt off and you can only get so much clothing under that armour

If you were the Almo's could you build Nubians in England? Or are they specific to certain region?
Imagine a bunch of Geordie Nubians, now they wouldnt feel the cold http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I didn't know that. I fought my first battle in the snow, as the Spanish against the French in Navarre.
I din't know all the tiring effects either I just thought the French fought better against my Knights.

I think the mechanics have changed in VI. I had some unexpected snow battles that surely weren´t the fourth in that year.

Yeah, had a snow battle in Scotland last night on the second battle of a single turn. The snow seemed to affect the mobility of the highlanders while not affecting my longbows... bad news for highlanders. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

yeah snow isn't the easiest thing to walk through,
Trust me you try walking through a couple of feet of snow and you'll find that it takes a lot more energy than normal... Add suits of armour, shields and swords into the mix and you'll be truly wasted
Light forces of course would have it easier not being so bogged down... and Longbows naturally don't have to move to make a killing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Fighting in a blizzard is even worse than in a sandstorm. I couldn't make out nothing 10 meters ahead of my troops. and knew we were engaged cause the archers have bat ears and began firing. The wolves howling were an nice scary touch. Like the thunderclaps in storms. Very realistic. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
And yes, I have noticed snow battles are more often after the patch.

I also had my first snow battle last night. Early period MTV w/ VI patched and MedMod. Those snotty Danes decided to break our alliance and make a land-grab for Normandy. He had nearly 1500 men total and I waited for him on a snowy field (actually I think I waited for him in the same area the the American troops landed on France on D-Day) and he advanced with Karls, Woodsmen and Landsmen. I had 6 units of high-valour Norman Knights (General was 7 valour, rest were 4). I didn't even let him start his real attack, however. What I did was Position my guys as far back on the map as I could to force him to march a long way in the snow. As soon as his line got within charging range, I just charged my whole line forward at the same time (quite impressive looking) and routed the hell out of him. His general unit was some sort of cavalry, and I rode him into the sea where I captured him and his entire bodyguard, then put them all to the blade.
Quite memorable. Should have gotten some pictures.

Oh, speaking of memorable battles, I was defending Ile de France as the English from the French. They had an ENORMOUS army full of Fuedal Foot Knights, some Heavy Cavalry, spearmen, etc. If I remember correctly, it was a loyalist army that sprung up in Flanders after I took it from them. I really shot myself in the foot because Flanders was locked down tight by those guys. I just didn't have anything to stand up to that many foot knights. Anyhow, he attacks me and I'm thinking "oh shit" because I've got 1 archer unit, something like 6 or 7 longbow units, and 4 Norman Knights. I think it was something like that. Anyway, the odds didn't look all that good for me. However, when I got on the map, it was a river map with one bridge And on top of that, the river had a sharp 90-degree bend in it right after the bridge, so I was able to put 3 full Longbow units about 50 yards from the bridge, exactly paralell with the length of the bridge. Also, I had a Longbow and standard archer unit at my side of the bridge, and other Longbows scattered around. I had my knights a good distance back, but left my only foot infantry unit (Claymores) right at the foot of the bridge to save my archers should they get across.
Anyway, so the attack starts and the Frogs come hauling ass at the bridge with Spearmen, and my longbows get into action and just massacre the hell out of them. It was amazing. They get about half-way across the bridge and then routed with about 25 guys left. So the AI tries with 2 FFK units, and they almost get to the end before routing. I keep routing them until my Longbows start running out of arrows. When half my bowmen are out, a spearmen unit gets to the foot of the bridge, and I counter-charge with my Claymores and rout them off the bridge. Some FFKs come after my Claymores, and I counter-charged onto the bridge with my Norman Knights. When I pushed the FFKs off the bridge I figure "Why stop now?" and charge all of my Normans over the bridge and just massacre the hell out of his routing units. I rolled over his general, all the foot knights, etc. I took something like 800 prisoners, killed over 600 people and when the battle was about to end I clicked the execute prisoners button http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I think I lost something like 40 or 50 guys (mostly claymores)
