You can re-train your units so as to replenish its ranks with freshh men, to improve its armour (if the castle you re-train the in is in a province with a good armoury), to improve its weapons (if the province has an ironworks), to improve morale (if the province has a church or other religious buildings) and to gain an honour bonus if that province offers such a bonus to troops trained there.

You do this by dropping the unit onto a castle/citadel/fortress, clicking on the build queue icon and moving the unit into one of the build queue slots.

The next year you take the unit out of the castle and you will find it is full strength and has taken on the armour/weapons/morale/honour bonus attributes of that province.

You can only do this if the castle/citadel/fortress has the capacity to build a unit of the kind you wish to up-grade.

Build a armourer for defensive upgrades, and build a metalsmith for offensive upgrades..

You can even buils a Viking unit in norway, and get the + 1 valour.
Then as I remember retrain the unit for free in Sweden and get defensive og offensive bonus

That´s a powerfull unit, for a few florins.

It works with all units ofcourse http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I just like vikings... And I haven´t even bought Viking Invasion yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I'm an old player and I didnt even know about this.

When units become obsolete they are used as arrow fodder, or to open the gates to a castle. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Well I think that it only refers to adding defensive/offensive bonuses from having a metalsmith/armourer or a Master Swordsmith, which confers a bonus, but it will not actually upgrade from say Feudal Men at Arms to Chivalric men at arms.
Only Royal Knights are upgradable from Early to High to Late. It's too bad that you can't take a unit of spearmen all the way up to SAP. I'm about 95% sure that is true.

I knew that you could upgrade for weapon and shield but the morale and honor part was new to me. My question is: Does anybody know the cost of said upgrades if any?

If its a full unit, FREE. If its a partial unit, then the cost to repair to full.

The valour bonus will only be applied to new troops. Retraining a V4 unit in a bonus province won't give them any extra valour.

King John, the units need only be in the province. They don't have to be in the castle.

Greg, sometimes but not always. I find many times if I try to put the unit into the queue it pops back to it's place in the province. If I put it into the castle, then into the queue, it stays. You saying this never happens to you? Hmmm, must be the difference between a junior member and a moderator. LOL

OBG, I will yield to you and King John as I suspect you've played the game much more than I have. But to answer your question, no, I've not encountered the situation you describe, nor do I recall putting the unit in a castle first being part of any other patron's description on how to upgrade/retrain units.

As to my moderating status and the game, being moderator means much of my game time is taken up here. I get my TW jollies by hanging around you folks who do actually play the games. Sad, isn't it? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Well, the units, while training, are not in the castle.

Because the other day one of my provinces suffered an unexpected invasion while I had three or four partial units waiting in the queue to be re-trained there. And I got a message saying the invaders had over-run the training fields and slaughtered my guys. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I can't now remember why I started going to the build queue via the castle. It may just have been a mistaken assumption or it may have been the popping out which OBG describes.

Only have one unit beinmg retrained at one time so the other guys (even if they are in units that have had losses) can protect the province.

You can only retrain one unit at a time, so it makes sense to limit it.

Since I read about the castle thing on this thread, I have been putting my retreads in the castle, and find that it helps me keep track of them better too.

I've seen this happen too. Seems the game gets a little confused if you're clicking around your provinces and sometimes it will let you select a unit in say Egypt, then open the training queue for Sicily and drop said unit into the queue. Next turn the unit pops back out in Egypt with nothing done. I usually catch this before it happens, but putting the unit into the castle first probably avoids this weirdness by synching up the unit with the correct build queue.
