Carthaginian Elephants:
These tractable elephants are well-suited to warfare. As a fast-moving force, they can easily trample down most opposition and fleeing enemies in particular. Their presence alone can induce fear, even in the most disciplined of troops. Standing just over 2m at the shoulder, these elephante are fast, deadly and very difficult for opposing troops to stop. They also have a good temperament for war, being easy to train and rarely given to running amok in battle. These elephant will terrify horses and all infantry, and many missiles glance off their tough hides. Each has a single driver mounted on a leather saddlecloth, and has metal "collar" plates that protect its most vulnerable spot: the veins in the neck just behind the ears.

Is it just me, or does 2m sound a little small for an elephant? I mean, there are some horses almost that tall-- its only about 6 feet.
thats at the shoulder. I don't know where the shoulder on an elephant still I know where you are coming from

These were the now extinct North African elephants that were smaller than Indian Elephants (and thier much bigger cousins south of the Sahara)and couldn't carry a tower.
They were the ones Ptolomy used in Time Commanders a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, that is a small elephant. But even the biggest horses we have today are not much more than 1.6 meters at the shoulder and significantly slimmer than the elephant. And never forget the immense size of the elephant's head, it will certainly grant the small elephant some needed size.
6 feet = 1.81 meters.

Wizzy
Read Ulug Beg's response --- he is dead on.
BTW they may not be completely extinct. There is recent genetic evidence that a few of the breed may still exist.

Oh -- a classic case of the mixing up of names.. I thought of African elephants, not realising that these were North-African elephants. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Don't dis the 2m elephants guys. That's bigger than the ones they bring into the cities to entertain the tourists in Asia. When you're standing squished up against a concrete wall while one of these brushes past you, and really really hoping it doesn't decide to take a step sideways, you realize just how massive they are. You may be as tall as the elephant, but in terms of mass you're totally insignificant.
Lets not forget that the romans were small even by contemporan standards. So, chopping through http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif
