Fighting the Shogun cause, with the threat of server termination who would carry on the Way of the Samurai using Barocca's STW Mod?
Whereas I will be sorry to lose the user friendly MI foyer, it has to be said that the VI server handles the game much better....As in Lag free.
The way VI is being played saddens me so the possibility of Lag free Shogun is about all that is keeping me interested at the moment....and as it's my Millenium Post I thought I would try and find out what kind of response there would be. I am just a bit concerned because Mods never seem to take off in the MP community. I just hope this one will prove otherwise

Well I don't have VI...as for lag I experience some in 3v3's and up but often it is a kind of good lag...
I would join in.
The news of Shogun not beein multiplayerable saddened my. Although I never played it online (when it was the high days of the Shogun, I was not online yet) I have always enjoyed the flair of the game, possibly more than MTW. If through the mod a new Shogun game arises, I would be happy to take part.

I would give it a whirl. I haven't played MTW or VI online, but I have them. STW/WE is my favorite game, and as I only started playing it online a little over a month ago, I'm still loving it. I figure I better enjoy it while I can, before the 2/12/04 EA server termination date ... .
I'll use it also after 2/12/04

a beta test of the mod is almost ready,
lots of tweaking for campaign stuff to do before i consider the "release" finished,
but you should be able to test out the current units online,
all japanese sengoku factoions PLUS clan Date and clan Otomo - more clans in the works - plenty more...
no mongols in the beta, they WILL be coming soon,
just i want the beta out in the wild to find the bugs and have run out of time to make all the groovy pics for the mongols,
play a few campaign turns and you'll understand,
i hope :-)
so far we are keeping as close as we can to 1.03, but we dont want to break the projectile file, so guns wont be quite so effective,
ninja dont use the ninja bif, (we ran out of custom folders),
ninja use samurai archer bif, so we gave them a bow too, just not much ammo - but they have longer range,
ALSO
we had to make a daimyo unit, the Hatamoto Cav,
so you have a cross between a heavy cav and a cav archer, again not much ammo.
If you think that sound way powerfull - um, kinda, so we gave them a weakness,
they only have 11 men in the unit
BUT, they can certainly fight and they have a small bonus,
check the unit prod file to see their bonus.
somewhere within the next 24 hours the beta version mod should be online...
cross fingers, rub lucky rabbit's foot, pray to buddha and hope like hell i have not forgotten any files in packing the mod...

The daimyo unit will refresh to full strenght(11) after each battle?
Kas http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
yes it does,
the heirs dont, so i made the unit buildable as well - too expensive to keep as regular cav for the numers though,
(only 11 men, yet costs 1/3 of heavy cav support costs.)
but good to rebuild your heir units.

a mod for japan's sengoku?????

Of course I'd try this mod, especially since STW servers close down in the not too distant future. And yes, in VI there's considerably less lag, so it should be more fun to play there.
Barocca, what's the approximate size of this mod? And did you also make the units more swift, especially the cavalry, so the Shogun feeling will be preserved?

the beta version is a 34MB download,
extracted it is 88MB and 1090 files,
the release version will be pushing 120MB, dunno how small i can zip it for download yet.
um - cav, we used as close as possible to 1.03, but medieval seems (at least to me) to be doing a few things different, thus we may need to adjust those stats to compensate for the new engine, IIRC we had to reduce cav charge bonuses because medieval seems to "bend" the numbers a bit.
Stats are such a touchy thing i am sure we are not finished tweaking them...
I'm a bit (skip bit if you like) of a tech (skip tech also if you like) noob, so forgive me if I ask stupid questions.
To install this mod...is it necessary to do a 2nd VI install to be able to keep playing VI?
btw...I can host those files on my server if you like.

Thanks for the info, Barocca. Yeah stats are always a tricky issue, but I know you'll do your best.
Unfortunately the rather large file size means I'll have to be creative to find a way to download it.

best idea is to install this mod into a clean copy of MTW-VI,
this is an expansion mod,
you can play medieval and vikings online with the mod installed crossing fingers here, you SHOULD be able to, i designed it that way

off in the distance, the horns sound. ancient of days, and tired from years of peace, Shimazu lifts his head to the sound. "bring my sons, bring my swords. lift up the banners, and let us ride into glory."

how was lag in that 4v4?
we have a theory that displaying the corpses gradually slows down the sytem,
each dead man is displayed individually,
the deadman file is roughly 30k and has to be "displayed" for each corpse,
each 100 corpses is 3MB of resources...
1000 corpses is 30MB,
in a 4v4 you would normally have had about 4000 corpses (or 100+MB of resources) in use before the end of the battle.
until either that theory is prooven/dsiproven or until i finish building the units i wont sort out deadpage stuff...
edit - my darn lousy maths 30x100 = 3,000 NOT 1,000
DOH
