Anyone have any ideas as to how the diplomatic aspect of the game has evolved in RTW?

I sincerely hope that it is slightly more complex than there only being 3 states (allied, neutral and at war) and only one type of treaty open to you when in any one of these states :/

I dont want anything really complex but maybe something like military alliances (e.g. faction A and faction B agree to attack faction C), trading agreements or right of passage agreements (e.g. allowing you to send your troops through an allies territory to attack a province on the other side of their empire or to help relieve a siege in one of their province you cant reach on your own) would be nice.

The thing id most love to see is the ability to impose terms in a treaty e.g. if you win a war your opponent must cede these provinces, give you that much cash etc

Diplomacy was always the bit of the game that annoyed me a bit due to its simplicity :/

Before anyone says it, yes, i understand that the series is called 'Total War' for a reason and if i want serious diplomacy then i should go play Civ or something, but id just really like to see it developed a bit, i doubt many (if any) of these ideas will make it into the game due to the designers concentrating on making battles bigger and better but since they decided to put a campaign map in the game they should try and develop that a bit too...

I "think" I read that the diplomacy in RTW will be Civ-like.

Hopefully CA will just take the concept but avoid the most gross errors of Civ3, such as the treaties not making difference between aggression and defence, or the allies involving you in a war against the rest of the planet on turn X and organizing a worldwide embargo against you in turn X+1...

yes i hate that
its like being russia o the outbreak of ww1 being allied to serbia. You make friends with a tiny nation that just so happens to attack everyone http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

form the RTW FAQ pinned at top of this forum and on .com webiste.

Q. Can you make your own treaties.

A. The player now has the option to negotiate specific treaties and other agreements with allies. This lets players do things like allowing military access to allies so you can move troops through each other's territory, make trade agreements, threaten weaker factions and demand tribute - and also to trade for money, information and even territory.

I agree all the way there should be a better diplomacy the great thing about a series of games is that you can look back and see what to improve on

I am glad the Diplomacy function will be much better in RTW, nothing is worse than having all your allies backstab you at once

Well, it can't be like in Civ, where the AI will except nearly nothing.

Well if the AI doesn't accept any treaties it seems a bit pointless having such an improved diplomacy in the game.

But I guess the world will still declare war with you when you get too advanced
