Hello all
Anyone has any idea what the ship stats attack and defense does? As far as I can tell there's not much difference from a carrack and galley combat wise.
I've been playing MTW for about 2 months now and noticed the AI always get to trash my fleet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif Most of the time I have more ships in the same sea zone, and very often the AI with fewer ships manage to sink all of mine with minimal casulties. I had a 2 star admiral and the enemy's a noob. and worst of all my ships are better in all stats (I had cog/carracks vs their galleys!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. And even if I did win (seldom), I would suffer huge casulties. It makes me wants to cry everytime I read enemy ship sunk : 2, own ships sunk : 5 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
So...how is the naval battle calculated? Or does the AI cheat?

AFAIK the calculations are quite mystical, i have no idea how it works...
BTW have you modded your game in any way? That could affect the battles...

snow i think you will find that you are in the same position as a number of other players. I'm in a major sea battle with the Egyptians at the moment and went into it with total control of the seas, and whilst I expected to lose some battles, statistically i think i have more chance of winning the UK lottery, and i dont even play that :-).
Just a thoguht for everyone out there, and i know that maybe this isnt historically accurate, but dhows dont have weapons and win battles by boarding ships. Now surely if dhow wins a battle it means they have killed or got the crew of the other ship to surrender and hence they have a ship that they could then use as part of their own fleet, providing they managed to sail the ship to one of their own ports, so that it then could become fully manned. In later years the capturing of ships was more important than the sinking as the captain and crew got a salvage fee. This could then lead onto my second point. If you are playing say the almo's and captured an english ship, what is to stop you then using that english ship to transport troops whislt flying under the english flag, ok anyone who's at war with the english may have a pop at you and there would need to be an element of chance that your ship would be compromised, but i think that this would just add to the overall feature for naval battles.
i suppose the reason for this gripe, is now the egyptians have naval superiority, my few remaining ships are under siege and i see little point in getting ports to produce ships given the way my navy has disintergrated, and that given my income is now falling at 10k florins a turn id be best strenghtneing my land based army for the eventual invasion that is about to come, whislt trying to restrict the egyptians to as much sea control as possible. im sure others out ther would do it totally different, but as ive got 50 years to go until GA ends, its going to be interesting to see if i can stay ahead points wise
It's actually really crappy because while the attack/defense stats of the ships may differ percentage-wise, they are way too close numerically, often leading to far too many random calculations in naval battles. Wes's MedMod addresses this by multiplying all attack/defense stats for ships by 10. So now while they remain the same percentage wise, their numerical difference is noticeable, leading to better naval fighting http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Download Medmod is my advice to you...

Thanks guys for the input. I'll give Medmod a try and see how it goes http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Btw my game is unmodded. I think I'll mod my ships to have attack and defense 1000 and show the AI whose boss http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif unless it decided it is unfair and sink them anyway lol
