View Full Version : A Golden Navy
I'm playing as the HRE it is about 1260 and something quite unexpected has happened. In the last year of playing this game I have never ever seen the Golden Horde become a naval power, but they are. They have built god knows how many dhows and they have them as far north as the Irish sea. Now hears the thing about dhows, they are so fast that they can outrun most of my ships, so I never destroy them. They just move from sea to shining sea. I could go after the horde but they have brilliantly disrupted my sea trade by being in the way of all of my shipping lanes and never wanting to make peace so that I can destroy them. It's awesome. It has added a whole new dimension to the game since my profits are through the floor I can't build as much as I want to and I have to build important buildings one province at a time and strategically place my units, but soon enough I'll get the horde and then they'll be getting a golden shower from my enraged teutonic armies.

If I ever see something like that I'll kick their asses right when that first dhow is pumped out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I see them build ships quite often if they manage to take the Russian steppes and parts of Asia Minor. As I normally don't have a europe-wide trade network, I'm not hit hard by temporarily losing the trade income. I never rely on it. Guess that stems from v1.0 and 1.1 games where the AI ships always attacked and you had to stack ships galore to scare them off.
Of course when I play an Eastern power, I have to deal with the Mongols and thus they'll never get to the ship-building stage. Also I think the Mongol storm might be more rewarding if you play GA games rather than having conquered half of Europe already before they arrive.

problem with dhows are that they can evade combat and must move to a new sea, and disrupt trade there. I could go for a few years without actually fighting the horde's ships.

Yes, but I'm playing the Italians now, the year is 1181, and I have at least 4-stack fleets in every part of the Mediterranean save the deep sea parts. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I see nothing wrong with it either, but I strongly suspect that the ships the mongols used in their attempts to invade Japan were Chinese in origin. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
