Would be interested to know if other have never had the envy of trying a faction.

For me the Almohads have never been an option, started a few campaigns and got bored after a few turns, same goes with Russia.

I had to left out a few factions due to poll-restrictions ... I have omitted the Byzantines, English, Italians, Spanish and Turks since they seem to be the most popular ones.

I agree about the Russians. They have never held any interest for me, I don't know why http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Germans for me, they are too big to start. I always choose to expand my borders according to a plan, germany seems a little messy.

I have never attempted to play the Argonese. Probably never will http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I only played Italians, Danes, and Polish since I have the game (3 months) , because I want to get good with a faction before moving to the next one. Hopefully CA will delay RTW long enough to let me play all the factions in VI, viking campaign included http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Used them all, I just don't enjoy playing some over the other ... such as England and France.

Poor starting locations and units that are uniform throughout the region are not ideal in having a good playing experience

HRE is probably the hardest faction IMHO

Hungarians. Never played 'em. Never will. Don't know why.

Almohads hold least interest for me. I like big armoured folks.

Surprised to see the HRE with 20% of the vote. I rate them the most fun - such long borders to protect the AI can give you some real trouble.

Played all of them. Don't see why I should ommit one faction. They all have something interesting to offer.

I am also not a big fan of the Germans. I do not like fighting a lot of defensive battles, I like to start small, expand fast and 'earn' my kingdom. When it is big enough for my liking I build up and go for the GA points. I am more of a roleplayer I think.

Just can't face playing as the French. Something very wrong about it as an Englishman http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Everyone else has had a try though.

I've never played the russians since I always start at early. Their unit-roster is really poor too. I'll never play the swiss either, although that would be fun.

Hungary are frequently overlooked but are in fact a very good faction, especially for cavalry armies as they have nearby lands that can allow them to build the more eastern types of cavalry e.g. steppe heavies, avars etc and combine these with the western cavalry they get as a catholic faction e.g. chivs

Szeleky are also the best light HA's ever, if youve played as Turks or Egyptians and enjoyed using Turcoman Horse\Mameluke HA's then i would recommend Hungary http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I've started two games as the HRE. My problem was always getting attacked by four or five factions in the first five years of the game. I wasn't having any fun or making any progress so I eventually gave up and haven't been back since. The latest version of MedMod has me speculating about a return though... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I have only played serioulsy as a few factions, the English, the Germans, and the Danes. I prefer to pick a few factions and really hone my skills at them rather than experiment a lot, which is what I did when I first got the game. I picked those three because that is where my ancestors are from, orginally and I feel the greatest kinship to them.
I really enjoy the HRE because it is so challenging. The Danes are also fun because you can go from one province to ruling the world, if you are cautious and play well.

Well I have french and English ancestors and I have played both extensively, but I don't much like their positions due to the fact that each must war with the other early on or the other will become too powerful to deal with. Of course I am also a quarter Polish, but sadly Poland seems to have gotten the shaft in terms of unique units and I don't much like playing them, since they really have nothing to offer. And yes I could try MEDmod, but Medmod has a lot of units and I don't really like that to be honest. The ideal happy medium for me would be a good amount of unique units, but not too many(as I think MM has, no offense to it's creator).

Never played Almohads, Egyptians, Hungarians, Sicilian and Polish, well not more than 20 turns.

I've never used the Russians or the English.
The Russians, just because I have never got round to it, and I usually play early.
The English, for no reason in particular.

I sense some turkish nationalism http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif . Or am I wrong?

I've never played the french, because they seem quite boring, although with Medmod I might give them a try.

will never bother with Almohads, Egyptians & Turks, too lightly armed and armoured for my liking.

sounds like a very good guess to me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I haven't played as The French or the Polish but I have had a go with just about every other playable faction.

I haven't played the French because, well it doesn't feel right for an Englishman in the Medieval Era http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

And as for the Polish, well I just haven't got round to them yet http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Well, I shall be honest then http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I dont like byz, because I dont find them fair to have their best units on early period. I dont like them being overpowered in the start with all those 7 star generals and byz infantry katakraphtoi.

The truth is I,myself couldnt find the source of this belittling concept of byz in my mind, but it is liable to be the blood thats running in my vains http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Too many konstantins http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Not to be insulting, but assuming you like to play the Turks a lot then it's the pot callin the kettle black http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif. While the Turks may lack the generalship that the Byzantine's get, they have a horde of excellent units to choose from in any period. JHI, Armenian Heavy Calv, Turcoman Horse, Turcoman Archers just to name a few.

I have played the Game with:
Turks
Almohads
Egypts
Byz
French
Danes
English
French
German until end.

I once also tried spain and italian, but didnt play em untl end.

I think Argonese i would never play.
I MP i almost play Egypts.
The strongest fractions are for me the Hungarians and on early the Byz.

Aymar de Bois Mauri

None of them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Every faction in every period is interesting to play.
Altough some are very hard or very easy, I think they're all worth the effort.
The good and challenging part is to take the greatest advantage from what you have. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

It's not just about wich units you can or can't train.

Variety is the name of the game... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

11-22-2003, 16:31
Yes Vigi Turks are very strong if you know how to use them. You forgot to mention the core of the turkish armies--

JI, Futuwwas, Ottoman Infantry, Ghulam Cav. Well unfortunately I dont play Sp anymore but in the MP these are the cores of turkish armies. Mostly blended with the JHI and AHC, sometimes Turcoman horses. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Vigi
11-22-2003, 17:59
True I haven't played them much except maybe experimenting in custom battles with their units and they are very powerful. An army with A really good general, JHI, Saracen Inf, futuwas, ji, turcoman archers, plus turcoman calv and armenian calv and..god whatever else they get http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif and you have an unstoppable force. Only downside of the Turks is all the crusadin catholics are out to get you, but with the kinda troops you get you will welcome the chance to get those JHI some valor http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Greetings and welcome to the Org Aymar de Bois Mauri This must be the week of long names http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

I totally agree with your point - variety is the name of the game. That is why I don't have standard armies, strategies or tactics. I never want to be stuck in a rut when playing a game.

Aymar de Bois Mauri
11-23-2003, 01:50
Thanks, Gregoshi

All the other good short names were taken... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I also don't have standard armies, tactics or strategies.

I think that in the long run, if one keeps a standard army, it freezes your interpretation of what the enemy might do and consequently makes you more vulnerable, not less...
