View Full Version : Autoresolve
I've played this game regularly since it came out and I'd probably call it the best game I own. Still there are some aspects of the game I don't get much into, and I wonder if I'm the only one?
Huge battles - I autoresolve If there are more that 2-3 stacks on each side. I don't have the patience for the long battles, and I hate the chaos that will inevitably reign.
Castle assaults - autoresolve almost every time. The embarrasing reason is, that I can't keep the losses as low as the autoresolve can...
Battles against horse archers - I hate fighting these creeps, I don't autoresolve every time, but if I'm sure of victory I do.
Am I the only lazy player out there??

No you are not, rest assured http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I autoresolve quite often in meaningless battles, and only play the important or interesting ones personally. Also I manually play the battles where I know my all new, high tech shiny army will take more losses spread out across all units on autocalc than if I fight personally.
Castle assaults are quite tricky, it's generally hard to conquer with less losses than the autocalc will give you unless you brought a specific castle assault army.
I usually fight battles against cav heavy armies manually (Horde etc), because the autocalc seems to favour cavalry a bit too much in its equations so you are often better off taking them on by yourself. Don't have much problems with HA though, just try to get them into a shootout with your missile troops, they will always lose due to lesser numbers.
I never autoresolve. ever.
Yeah once you get arbalesters HA's are dead meat (even in trouble against regular archers). Still they ANNOY me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
I like my battles orderly, and often HA's force you to change your battleplan - especially if you have no quick cav.
Actually this has become a bigger issue in the latest version, where the ai doesn't oblige you and line up directly opposite your forces (and that's a good thing).
I have played an entire campaign where I autoresolved every battle. I have also played many where I personally led every battle. Now I enjoy the early fights where I am attacking with insufficient forces and I must be clever to win, but once multiple stacks start being the norm I will autocalc more often unless I can't afford to lose many troops, because I am always WAY better than autocalc gives me credit for. If I am playing a VI campaign I generally lead all my battles, especially if I am playing as the Vikings or as one of the weaker factions.
It all comes down to what you enjoy. Personnally, I enjoy the battles as much as the campaign so I fight them most of the time.
Is there any way I can understand how many star general do I make? I mean I have beaten 9 star emperor of 3320 men with 4-star general with 2100 men, but I wonder whether there s any way you can tell how many stars you are worth? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

I autoresolve when:
1) I have very high odds (5 to 1 +)of winning and don't have important people like high star generals or princes involved because they might be lost or ransomed.
2) I have only low tech armies or mercs and good odds.
3) It is late and I have a migrane.
4) There are a lot of battles going on and I figure I might as well take my lumps and move on.
5) They have a couple of princes in the stack and I might get lucky and nab one for ransom. (I have found that there seems to be a greater chance of capture vs. kill in auto. Please someone correct me if I am wrong.)
I auto calc. a lot because I'm lazy, and especially if you are attacking a king, I have NEVER captured one playing the game but often when it is auto calculated. Those 10000+ florins are useful. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I never have more than one stack/province... thus I always fight with my 600-940 men against the computers 2k+ armies..
if i autocalc i often lose, if I play manually I almost always win...
i have some armysetups that allows me to beat the comp... but the AI cant handle them as I can, so I have to manually resolve http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
ONLY time i autocalc is if the victory is 100% guaranteed, like a full stack of mine against some rebel archers...
some day i will try a campain with autoresolving though.
Lots of different views it seems. MAybe I'll have to try a campaing completely free of autocalc. Interesting challenge.
I usually consider myself better than the ai too. I had one of my usual "I'll autocalc this one" - situations yesterday, where my army of primarily AUM was attacked in sinai by the egyptians. I autocalced and won with a loss of 300, reloaded and played myself and lost 21 Once those camels start fleeing nothing is going to get in their way http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
