I'm also rather new to this router stuff myself. I have two pcs networked together and i'm only able to host if i have my cable connection connected directly to one pc and than to the router to the other pc, but i can only host with the one pc with the cable connection connected directly to it. If i have the cable connection to the router first than going to the pcs i can't host with either pc, as well as not being able to play on LAN. So, i just leave it with the cable going to one pc first.

When i host a game in mtw:vi i can't see it with my other pc, but i can join my own games when i'm logged onto gamespy and i'm able to play, just not when i'm in mtw:vi, i haven't tried it with other games.

Anyway can host with the other pc that dosn't have to cable connection going to first or able to join my own hosted games with that pc?

How do i verify if i got a valid ip address? How do i find my routers control panel to access the ports?

When i log on to gamespy with my pc without the cable connected directly to it, it says that my interal ip address if different from my external. Dose this mean i have only one static ip address and need two, yet it gives me two different ip addreses for both pcs, but maybe one isn't valid?

Can ya help me out at all please? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

ok, where to start, i myself arent too smart on networks and such, but my brother has recently configure our home network so i can host games on my connection.

we are running a LAN with about 5 PC's connected to it at my place, and we use a dedicated server for the network. Connected to that server is our router and our firewall. Anyway, there is a list of the ports that need to be forwarded for you to be able to host, so take note of those ports, and forward them using whatever setup you use (we have a unix server, so i dont know how it all works really, but thats my brothers forte).

i think you probably know all that, so now onto the buisness of ip adresses and port forwarding. you should have a total of 3 IP adresses for your entire setup. 1 will be your IP that is your internet connection, the other 2 will be the specific ip adress for each of your PC's. i tihnk that you need to forward the ports to the particular PC;s for it to work, but im not too sure on this. My brother is away for a week, but im sure i can get him to post here on how to fix things up, or attempt to solve that problem.

If hardware router supports web access for configuration, they probably goes through this well known port for configuration (from a computer connected on the LAN side of the router):

Total War is a peer-to-peer game. That means the host is the server for the battle, and the host's ip address has to be visible on the internet. If you can't ping the ip address, you'll never see the hosted game. Inexpensive routers often use NAT (network address translation) to set up a firewall which hides a machine's ip address behind the router's ip address. The router gets the ip address being handed out by the ISP, and in turn provides a local ip address (often in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range reserved for LAN) which all routers automatically block. Putting the machine in the DMZ (all ports forwarded) would work for hosting Total War games if the GameSpy server gave out your router's ip address as the one for joiners to connect to, but it doesn't. GameSpy gives out the local address of your machine which is blocked. If you can't turn off the NAT, you can't host. There is no way to manually put your router's ip address into the game via an option such as direct ip because CA opposes this. They don't want people playing direct ip. Why? I don't know because multiplayer is not more than 1% of their market. That means 99% of the CD keys are not being used.

Well i guess i'm just shit out of luck being able to host with just my one pc and not the other. Even though i do have a cheap 56k back up isp which i can use for joining my own games, bah i'd rather be able to see them or join then through ip.. grrr.

1% only mp market that just stinks. I thought having a better mp over sp earns a better reputation for a game? Oh well i'll just continue my long wait for a good strategy mp game that i like and be stuck with these games that could be so much better, but aren't.

I've come across a router with NAT firewall which will allow hosted games to be visible to other players. It's the D-Link DI-624. I've spoken to Kenchi_Mo and he can also host using the older model D-Link DI-614 which is cheaper. These routers allow one machine on the LAN to be placed in the router's DMZ which effectively makes that machine visible on the internet. D-Link's implementation of the DMZ is somehow superior to LinkSys and effective in removing the NAT firewall protection for that one machine. My hosted games were never visible using the DMZ of the older LinkSys BEFSR41 router. You can enable and disable the DMZ without rebooting. This week Best Buy is selling both of these D-Link routers with mail in rebates making them $70 and $40 respectively.
