View Full Version : strategies
Hi guys,
Would anyone know what exactly is the difference between the strategies (CATHOLIC_EXPANSIONIST, BARBARIAN RAIDER,ETC) I mean they are defined of course by the prod files but would anyone have a general overview? Specifically would anyone know what the POPE's strategy does? Is it possible to have two POPE's (Pope and Anti-Pope perhaps)? Does he just stay and manage his territories or does he expand and invade?
Thanks,
Clare

Playing with the settings makes the factions behave differently. Almohad default is MUSLIM_PEACEFUL, and it seems Spanish always beat them - change it to MUSLIM_DEVOUT or MUSLIM_EXPANSIONIST and it seems to rev them up a LOT.
DEFENSIVE tends to make a faction more "stay at home", EXPANSIONIST will make them fairly aggressive, EXPANSIONIST_CRUSADER adds in the ability to make good use of the Crusades to gain territory/suck up your border troops (if you are also playing as a Catholic faction). STAGNANT is default for Byz - again, change it and they tend to rock out in Early.
I also think that the settings will effect what the AI controlled Factions will build, and what they see as a priority. I feel it has to, because if you adjust the settings/factions I mentioned earlier, they tend to become aggressive and much more militaristic.

But sometimes the AI behaves not like it suppose to. It's killing me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif
most of the time the factions will use the behavior set to it and the behaviors are pretty self explanitory EXPANSIONIST means they will try to take more terratiory defensive will make them tech up usally but the they will change behavior throughout the game
thanks dessa
Okay... yeah I kinda figured that TRADER would make them build mercantile buildings and ships as opposed to CRUSADER which would build CHARTER HOUSES but would anyone know what POPE does? I'm asking because I usually use the POPE character as a sort of 'king' like if you were playing a scenario between squabbling nobles the POPE would be the King and his excommunication would be like a Bill of Attainder.
Does anyone know?
Thanks,
Clare
the pope sits in the corner and does nothing and occasionally takes advantage of his surrounding terratorys
thanks dessa
Thanks Dessa
Okay, confirms my suspicions. That would be excellent for the 'king' faction.
Thanks,

Can anyone confirm my suspicions that the behaviour changes to meet the factions needs during the game.
In otherwords if say the English, who are CATHOLIC_CRUSADER_TRADER, are down to their last two provinces then their behaviour changesto say Desperate_Defence.
If this is the case then Im sure the pope and rebels behaviour stays The same for them. So it wont matter too much to DClare4.
But I still would like to know if this true. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
I think so, anyways the mainly used ones like FAITH_TYPE ie CATHOLIC_CRUSADER or ORTHODOX_STAGNANT seem to just use these as guidelines for what they build. But I guess without official word you can't confirm or deny that they change strategies.
Cheers,
Clare

Youre right without official word we wont know.
But looking at Crusader_unit_prod each unit has an "Unit choices (AI)" section. Every unit including the ones built only by specific factions has a complete list for all the strategies, like say ByzLancers has:
""POVERTY_STRICKEN(181), DESPERATE_DEFENCE(18.1), CATHOLIC_EXPANSIONIST(217.2), CATHOLIC_NAVAL_EXPANSIONIST(217.2), CATHOLIC_TRADER(181), CATHOLIC_CRUSADER_TRADER(181), CATHOLIC_EXPANSIONIST_CRUSADER(217.2), CATHOLIC_DEFENSIVE_CRUSADER(144.8), POPE(90.5), CATHOLIC_DEFENSIVE(144.8), CATHOLIC_ISOLATIONIST(90.5), ORTHODOX_DEFENSIVE(144.8), ORTHODOX_EXPANSIONIST(217.2), ORTHODOX_STAGNANT(181), MUSLIM_PEACEFUL(181), MUSLIM_EXPANSIONIST(217.2), MUSLIM_DEVOUT(217.2), BARBARIAN_RAIDER(289.6), REBELS(181), CLOSE_TO_SUPPORT_LIMIT(45.25)""
The reasons for this I dont officially know as putting in catholic and muslim strategies is pointless. The Byzantines wont change religions.
But others like "close to support limit, poverty stricken" etc, indicates to me that the strategies change according to the factions situation. It gives factions the ability to change what units and buildings to choose to build if say they were close to theirsupport limit.
Now I could of just made a fool of myself cos it might not be true. But if anyone officially knows (hint, hint moderators!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif let us know. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
