Recently I have been playing a little Unreal tournament online. And although it is a completely different game to Shogun, it is not so good.
It is fun for a little while but it's just too manic.
My main point is that there are hundreds, literally hundreds of players online and many clans(had a look around).
I suppose cos it is easy just to play and many different servers it gives it more scope.
Last night on Shogun the average attendance was mid-20's. Poor, very poor.
Such a shame this game is'nt supported properly.
Maybe though a small community is better here because only the people that can be bothered to strategize and think come here. So it's almost like an elite band (with the exception of one or two of course). In someways we should be thankful that our community is like it is but wouldnt it be great to log on sometimes and find 250 online with fierce competition.
I think it is fair to say that the Dreadmasters are a very capable bunch of players and more often than not we cannot get a good game as no-one wants to play. It can get a bit stale.

Shogun online is a tough game to master with an established core of strong vets, but that core is shrinking as vets go off to play other games. It's to the long term benefit of the remaining vets to help new players develop their game so these people will continue playing. I know this can be like navigating through a mine field, but beaten up newbies will find some other game to play because it's no fun to loose all the time, and the number of players in the foyer will continue to shrink. Serious games between players of uneven strength is ultimately boring for the stronger player and frustrating for the weaker player if he doesn't understand why he lost. I've been bumping into a lot of new players looking for help with their game lately, and do what I can to help them out. I like to ally with them in a 2v2 to work on tactics and coop play at the same time.

If I thought you were serious I would be offended, but as I know you arent I am willing to laugh along with you.
Must be a shame for you though, being a failure, admitting you cannot control the aforementioned T**kD**g.
Sorry for taking this off topic.
Anyway this was a topic about how good and friendly(although far too small) this comunity is.
Lets stay friendly eh??

I think possibly also the die-hard vets all converted to MI/WE yet newbies who just bought the game because the cover looked good, and have never found the online server still play Shogun. So its not the fact that the vets are moving on but that the newbies are not coming in.

Tournaments and arranged matches provide challenging play. As an alternative, what some accomplished teams are doing to get a challenge in casual play is to attack on a difficult map. It can be a lot of fun to get away from the standard flat maps. I've also got this idea that the game is more fun without guns, but maybe that's just me.

I don't really play MI (I've tried... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif) but I have been playing a bit of STW recently. It seems to me that newbies get split 50/50 between the two games. It is not suprisingly that the neither of the games catch on with these people when attendance is so poor... if all newbies came into MI, I'm sure you'd have the healthy attendance figures that we used to find on the olde server 10 months ago.
Personally I reckon you should all quit playing MI and get back on some STW. It's great you can watch TV or even smoke while you're playing... (that was a speed reference BTW http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif)

Ghost Recon is a very nice game BUT it does not make you feel like you are in a real war. Operation Flashpoint does that mate http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Anyway they are both great games http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

No avoidance Mag.
I will fully accept your challenge, but it will be at a convenient time, not just when YOU ask for it.
My clan was very busy at that time with much work being done.
I am not a wolf and I do not jump to attention when you bark your commands.
Also Mr. Khant,
Would you kindly look at my battle record before trying to be cheeky about us attacking.
One of the only games where I defended was a game that Matlow and I JOINED, not hosted. We fully expected to be attacking but we had to defend. Perhaps we should have attacked because it wasn't much competition fending off an uncoordinated rush by EvilC and LordTed.
Get your facts right Mr. Khant, then come back to me with a real point ok?

Gah! we rushed whoever was in the middle so his ally couldnt help him. Quick easy win if the ally in the corner has few horses or is slow.

Does your Mr. Khant not teach you to adapt your strategies if they seem like they will fail. Or does he encourage the blind " stick your head down and charge regardless" strategy. Hardly in compliance with SunTzu now is it. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/redface.gif)

Thanks.

"A mind is a terrible thing to taste."
I'll never forget the first time I set foot in the MI forum (having never played STW) after beating the campaign on expert and the historical stuff and a few customs I figured I'd check out the multiplayer. It must have been on a good night because there were maybe 50 names in the server (this was just about 2 months ago). I joined some games and got soundly trounced. Yes, it was very tough to take at first. It wasn't just some predictable AI I was trying to outwit but an experienced player who had gotten in at the grassroots level and doggedly fought for experience along with his fellow gamers. I had asked a few who had left me particularly mauled and awed to give me some help and everyone I had asked gave me at least a couple of pointers if not a 2 or 3 minute Q&A session. But it was not until I was asked to join a clan that the worm started to turn. That's what really kept me coming back and playing. I don't know how to keep the thing alive other than to show up and care. I watched a newb rant for five minutes about how he hates the game and swear and cuss and say hes gonna quit. But eventually he settles down, rethinks his game and goes back in (albeit often with a new iteration of his name but he hasnt given up). I have advised him to find a clan.

..let me sit 1 time on my "little personal cloud"....first u start moaning about noone join u and play ur team....and than u refused every battle we offerd u...
so dont speak about who beat who nether about personal things....just tell me when!!!
ofcourse i didnt checked ur battles, but if ur the great attacker, well we will defend ...we wont destroy ur attcking record... just bring ur whole clan and let the war begin, i cant wait to kick ur little "ass"....

Sorry Koc, you did miss the point.
My point was that even if we played all day, what after that? Cos regardless of winning or losing what happens after we have played? There is noone to play after that. That was my point Koc,
I am sorry that maybe I did not put it across very well.
I was not insinuating that I beat you all the time, You are right we dont ever really play.
My whole point was that there arent many people on line at the moment. In no way was it meant to be a personal attack on you.
Boromir.
ok boro,
maybe i understood u wrong, np...

you declaring an official hunt in here orlok koc?
you should do that at the wolf forum as well... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Lol mag, Koc and I are sorting out a misunderstanding, not declaring war or a "hunt" as you call it.
The problem here is that "one" cannot put meanings and expressions behind the sentences.
Hence why my sense of humour is misunderstood because I never deliberately offend anyone.

Erm, does attacking one enemy army with two friendly armies sound 'like they will fail' and i think Sun Tzu would agree with dispatching one opponent BEFORE another comes to help him...
