Hi,
I've just started playing my first as the turks, finally succuming to the islamic influence.
I was under the impression that in the Late Era the Royal unit of the turks was the Sipahis of the Porte. Indeed I am able to build them...but for some reason my current kings unit changed from high to late era ghulum bodyguards
I tried 'correcting' this problem in the Crusader_prod_units11 (or whatever) file using the Gnome editor (cant recommend it enough!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif but removing FN_TURKISH from Late period Ghulum bodyguards to make the Sipahis of the Porte the only royal unit of the period. But still my king turns upgrades into late period GBG and this annoys me greatly.
I want to be able to upgrade even my former High period GBG into Sipahis of the Porte but this is not possible it seems.
Can anyone explain what the real deal is, and if there is any solution if indeed there is a problem? (and perhaps if its not a problem a way to upgrade GBG into Sipahis of the Porte)
Thanks Heaps,
Mike
Errrr..dont kick me for that but are you sure U did all the building prerequisites for SoP? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

if i remember right you cant upgrade GBG to SoP, why does it bother you though you can easely train SoP as a unit by its self when you get the building requirements..dont forget that late GBG are quite good units

I haven't played the Turks campaign for a long time now, but IIRC, it's just not possible since Ghulams are totally different unit that Sipahis, and you can only retrain units of the same kind.
Perhaps it could be argued that CA should have included such a possibility for VI, but normally you should be able to build Late Ghulams too, so if you upgrade your old royalty to Late Ghulams, they are not worse than Sipahis save the bow.
However, your King showing up as a Late Ghulam guard indeed raises some questions... He should be a Sipahi of the Porte..
Perhaps Cebei is right in that you don't have the build requirements yet and thus The Late Ghulams are used as an "emergency" unit.
Since modding didn't help it may be a quirk..watch what kind of unit the next king will get...

I am under the impression that you have overlooked a fact - when you go from High to Late with the Turks, you have to wait until your last king from the high era dies, only when a new king ascends in the late era shall he have Sipahi of the Porte. I've had that too in my last game as the Turks. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
GBG can't be upgraded to SoP. After SoP available, new Kings and Princes will appear with SoP. The old ones will be stuck with GBG.

No wonder I never get them. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
Since I never get Turcopoles either when playing the Turks I tought they would be some kind of 'once in a blue moon' unit like the Cataluñan merc. almuhawars.
I look for them...when I get to T. Playing alphabetically now and quite comfy with letter H. Letter F lasted less than 2 hours btw. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Lancer - I believe the turcopoles are a Catholic unit - only buildable in those Eastern provinces. Something about mimicing Eastern tactics. Almughavers are mercenaries only as far as I know.
The lack of upgrade from early era Royal Knights/Ghulam Bodyguards to high and later era versions really drives me up the wall. Having my best general in a one man unit of obsolete untrainable units is really quite annoying

Are you patched up? I believe the un-upgradeable bodyguard units was a 1.0 bug. I upgrade my bodyguard units thru different eras all the time (with the noted exception of RGB not being upgradeable to SoP).

I haven't actually played the main campaign all the way through an era change since I got hold of VI, so you may have a point there - this sort of thing happened ages ago. There's hope after all No more mad 17 valour generals wiping armies out single-handed on an ancient old nag. Now they can do it on a new shiny horse... hopefully.
