Kas

I read the "My name is lahll" topic and was wondering where that name came from...

In fact many use strange or funny names, perhaps nice to know why someone picked "that" name.

(Perhaps a bit of topic, but who cares http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )

I start with mine...

At first I picked the Kaneyashi name to play STW, just because it's a japanese name. I used several other japanese names to play online also...like Kunisada, Kuroda and Kasuga. When I played with the Kasuga name I met Ace and joined Aggony as AggonyKasuga. Hence some started to call me Kas. On ezboard I still use the Kaneyashi account, because it's my master account...always sign with Kas though. On most other forum types it's Kas now.

Oh...and Aggony is Aggony and not Agony...just because Ace made a typo when he registered the clan http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Cebei
11-18-2003, 14:59
Cebei was the name of the general of the Batu Khan of the Golden Horde. Cebei and Subidei were the only 9 star generals (hehehe) of the Horde and Cebei won most of the victories of the Golden Horde while Subidei mostly protected his flanks.

One of my friends told that my battle tactics (extensive usage of horse archers and war of attrition skirmishes) were very similar to Cebei, so I started using that nick for multiplayers.

For playing STW online back in Oct 2000, I wanted to use the name Yukimura Sanada who lived from 1570 (1567?) to 7 May 1615. He fought against the Tokugawa at the Battle of Sekigahara and again at the Seige of Osaka Castle (1614, 1615). He lead a group of ronin who hacked their way through enemy lines to Tokugawa Ieyasu's headquarters during the fighting around Osaka castle, but was ultimately killed during that Seige.

That name was already taken by someone who I never saw play online. I briefly used the truncated Yuki instead, but switched to Yuuki after Idaho pointed out to me that Yuuki was the male form of the name. I later discovered that the name means courage. After about two months of playing online I helped form the Takiyama (mountain waterfall) Clan, and we prefix our names with mizu (water).

wow, my name isn't so elaborate as the ones above, but very interesting stories all

t1master is really very simple, t for tim, that's my first name, 1 for me, master is part of my last name masterson.

i knew nothing about the 1master/dreadmaster clan when i chose my name, so it would seem to be fate that i am now MasterT1. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I was gifted mine by some friends... we used to have evenings where we would all bring our PC's togetther and network them. We would play games like Diablo, Diablo2 and a lot of Deltaforce and Halflife etc.
I like using the sniper weapons and backing off into the distance... when I killed my friends they used to say " Rob... you bastard" http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif so I started using it as my gaming name.

Postino
11-18-2003, 19:16
a long time ago i had to buy a shirt for work and i was forced to get one from a uniform store. it looks like a security guard, or postmans shirt. when i wore it it was pretty counter-culture looking and many of my freinds liked it. they started calling me the post-man, t5hen postino and posty. i have had this name for nearly a decade, and i have never met another postino, but i have meet a postman.

Togakure
11-18-2003, 19:17
Togakure is an old, respectable and well-known ninja ryu in Japan.

Jonin is a ninja clan leader, one who operates predominantly on a strategic level. Chunin are tactical leaders for missions, and command the genin. Genin are the ninja operatives that carry out missions.

The Prefix "O" in Japanese means "Great" (as in O'Sensei--"Great Teacher"--which is how most refer to Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido).

So Togakure O'Jonin means "Great Ninja Clan Leader of the Togakure Ryu."

And yes, I did give myself this name. If you're gonna fantasize, I always thought it best to really GO for it. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I gave Toga the personal name of Momotaro, which means "Peach Boy." Momotaro is a legendary Japanese fairy tale character, born from the center of a peach, who was very small but immensely strong. He was known to fight nasty-nasties and defeat them. He was my favorite Japanese hero as a child.

Kraxis
11-18-2003, 19:55
GAH

I will explain Kraxis.

Kraxis was a cruel and brilliant general of the Drajan armies in an old RPG called Dark Sun: Shattered Lands. I was so impressed with his demeanor I adopted his name when I could be my normal Tarrak.

Sasaki Kojiro
11-19-2003, 00:12
Not too inventive...I just took the name of one of the provinces from Shogun (Shinano). When I went to register online I decided I didn't like Shinano much and changed it too Mimasaka...but I forgot how to spell it so it came out Mimesaka...which is my name at all the other TW forums.

Tempiic
11-19-2003, 01:11
Tempiic... It is a memorial name to put it simply... I once founded, with 2 others our own clan 3 and a half year ago or so. Half year later we decided, those interested, to join up with FF. To remember our former clan and to show we all came from the same clan originally before we joined FF, we decided to use the first (or two) syllables of our old name and then add the prefix of our clan to it...

I used to go by the name IIC-Temptation back then (which was given to my by a guy who goes by the name Cerniic nowadays for, I guess, obvious reasons)

LadyAnn

Anniep is the login name for my now defunct ISP. When I got online on STW, asking for name, I simply put the login name. And you guessed it right: my first name + first character of my last name.

I went with several other names, mostly ladyAn, An or similar thing. But anniep starts it all and now I use it again.

Louis de la Ferte Ste Colombe
11-19-2003, 04:33
Hum.... I can say 'see link in sig'. But, just checking it, I got an invalid link.... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Sieur de Ste Colombe is the name of a baroque XVIIth Century composer. His name might have been an alias for someone else. So for me, in a sense it might be a mask behind a mask http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

He became 'famous' (in a limited way) again when XVIIth century music made a small comeback through movies such as 'Tous les matins du monde', which feature some Ste Colombe music, and Marielle play Ste Colombe role in the movie. In the movie, Colombe is an old, demanding master.

I like the sound of Louis, and it kind of fit with MTW timeframe. And I also like woods, not to mention fighting in wood in MTW, so here you are; add 'De la Ferte' (which mean; from the wood).

That's how you end up with a very long name

The link to 'Simurgh' works.... and it has been discussed before in the barracks. The Simurgh is a myth; the King of Birds, living in the Tree of Knowledge.

Online, I go with [FF]Louis St Simurgh.... Mainly because a [FF]Simurgh de La Ferte Ste Colombe is too long for gamespy to handle properly

When my house m8 introduced me to STW, Ninjakilla, i played a ouple of SP campaigns and i choose barryashiguru as my save game file. When i first played online i went to use the saem name but NK told me ashis werre peasants so i picked the next unit i knew which was No Dachi .. thats where BarryNoDachi came from and hence KenchiBND when i joined Clan Kenchikuka. eventually as most ppl started to call me Baz (clanm8s esp) i decided to start MTW with KenchiBaz as my name for convienience http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Balamir
11-19-2003, 21:43
Balamir was the Turkish commander which refused to go under the command of Chinese in middle asia and migrated west with his army of loyal Huns. As he moved on, the small tribes such as saxons goths franks and bla bla which formed today's europe started to run away from Balamir's army, the lots of tribes getting squanched up tight in the continent we now call europe.

So in a way Balamir was a famous turk commander which, in theory created the base of todays europe.I was quite fascinated by that fact, and decided to adopt the name. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I did my first Shogun games online as Khenu Baal. It is how you try writing in German how most likely Hannibal was really called. Being noobish and thinking you are a great commander if you beat the AI 3 times in a row, I lost most of my games.
That was an important lesson for me when I was teached humbleness. I wanted to put a sign and chose Bomilkar as a new name. Bomilkar was one of Hannibals commanders. I thought that this might better fit me as I could not compare to the true master of the arts of war, a leader who nearly won a war that was lost before it began.
It took me some time to get used to being Bomilkar and not the great Hannibal himself, but after some time I found Bomilkar suiting me much better than Hannibal.

Ithaskar Fëarindel
11-20-2003, 03:26
Ithaskar is made up. I wanted something that sounded authentic to Medieval periods instead of the old "Soul", and something I thought would be more unique.

Fëarindel is Elvish http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
I threw together some words that are marked in the back of my copy of the Silmarillion
Fëa (spirit or soul, I am still the Soul)
rin (from "ring", meaning cold or chill)
del (meaning horror, these last two more about the fantasy side of things.)

because it is such a noobish name no one will be bothered with me...

tootee
11-20-2003, 17:03

ichi
11-21-2003, 08:54
ichi means 'one' in japanese, but I chose the name after a movie character. From the 60's, there is a series of movies starring Shintaro Katsu as Zatoichi (he even teamed up with Toshiru Mifune in a couple).

Zatoichi is blind, and makes his living as a masseur (anma in japanese). But he also likes to gamble, and is a member of the Yakusa. He uses a cane sword to put some serious hurt on a variety of folks, ranging from rude and inconsiderate folks all the way to corrupt provincial officials. He has a pretty cool sense of morality, one that I connected with. I advise you to check out one of the flicks if you are interested in samurai cinema.

Since he is always on the run, he goes by 'ichi, just plain . . .

ichi

scudknight
11-21-2003, 10:26
Wow a lot of great stories My name actually was meant for humiliation - I applied and got a job at a local Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament when I was 18 or so and was immediately named scud because of my clumsyness on the field I would fire off like a missile into the jousting lane if I saw a stray weapon and would normally get struck by a horse before the night was over.

common anagrams for scud:
Squire Cant understand D***
Squire Crushed Under Donkey

I eventually came over my clumsiness and when I was promoted to Knight I kept the name.

king steven was the first name that popped into my head.

Lechev
11-21-2003, 15:15
Lechevalier is the french word for horseman or knight. I was in an armoured regiment during my active years of national service. Some countries called their armoured regiment as calvary regiment and as i was a crew in an armoured vehicle, i took up this nick as in MHO, a modern tank is equivalent to an armoured knight in the medival era.

Jochi Khan....

Shogun Total War was given to me as a birthday present by my Son ...Orda Khan.

The Wizard
11-23-2003, 19:38
Interesting explanations. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

My name comes from a game called Sacrifice, where you played a monster-summoning, butt-roasting wizard. So I opted for the name 'TheWhizz', as in: The Wizard, adding the 'h' to the name because without it it just didn't look right. I was 12, mind you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Anyhoo, people started calling me 'Whizz' and 'Whizzy', often forgetting the 'h'. Hence 'Wizzy', albeit it is a name people tend to use when they are my good online friend on another board.

Online, my name is WarDemoN, as in Demon of War. 'Nuff said. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Monk
11-23-2003, 19:54
I played STW a lot and the warrior monks were my favorite units, always used them in big ways. i used to play UT (classic unreal tournament, before 2k3 came out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif ) and i used the name "Killermonk" for that. It became my online name for a while in every game i played, be it Tribes 2, MTW, Red Faction or w/e.

So when the .Org asked me to pick a name, i decided to just drop the "Killer" and go with Monk, and thats how my name was born.

Now i use a different name, Rage, for my online gaming. That comes from a ladder match in the game tribes 2 when my base had been destroyed and my team was scattered, i charged the enemy's base and killed around 10 of them before they finally took me down, after the match somebody said i was in a raging fury. So that's how that name was born http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Orda Khan
11-25-2003, 18:30
Nice idea Kas, I've often wondered about some of the player names.
As a boy I remember being very impressed with the history of the Mongol conquests. The size of the Empire ruled by a small nomadic nation was incredible and something I had to look into.
During my research I came across Orda. He was the eldest son of Jochi, who was eldest son of Chingis. I found many unanswered questions regarding Orda and though I have tried, I have failed to find out more.

Jochi was sent by Chingis to subjugate the people of the forest..the northern steppes and taigra. He seemed very astute and Chingis was so impressed by the manner in which Jochi achieved this with very little bloodshed, that he granted this region to him ( the area to the north of the Aral Sea and east of the Volga )
Unfortunately, Jochi died just before Chingis Khan, so his realm was handed down to Orda, who became the first Khan of what was to be known as the White Horde. He died in 1280, only one of Chingis Khan's grandsons lived longer..Qubilai and as the eldest of the grandsons, this would have made him around 70 years of age, quite old for the time and definitely by Mongol standards. He was one of the 10 Princes who were involved in the Russian and European Invasion, in fact one account credits him with command at Liegnitz. Little else, information wise, exists.
I could never understand why it was Batu who was granted command and the subsequent conquered lands as these were in part, those that had been granted to Jochi. As no mention is made of Orda it remains a mystery.
Perhaps I should have used Batu as a nick, it being more correct as I am the second son too...but Orda is a far more mysterious character...

.....Orda

Elmarko was my first online name. It, like T1's, is a combination of my first name: "Mark." and the first 2 letters of my last name. My friends refer to me as Marko and therefor you have El-Marko. I became a member of the Fearful Ways clan in STW and my name became ElmarkOFear. When I left to start the Ugly community a lot of people had shortened my name to Elmo. Thus I am now UglyElmo. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You can be cut down in a melee...
You can be overcome in single combat...
You can charge in where angels fear to tread... at impossible odds and with no chance of survival.
