I just wanted to hear everyone's stories about a great Civil War they had. My story is looong so I'll post it as soon as I have the chance. What side do you guy's choose? I always choose my king's side. It just doesnt feel right to me siding with the rebels....

They're a good way to get rid of a weak royal line (like the English) and replace it with something of a more hearty stock (like a Dane) that you can "purchase" from the enemy. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

If you can set it up right you can get a good number of your provinces to revolt at the same time.

So needless to say, I've done it.

If I find my royal line running out (old King with no heirs)..

Then it is time to start lowering the loyalty...

Put large armries under the command unloyal generals and generally ensure up have more disloyal generals than loyal ones... It helps if the majority of your good troops will come over with a rebelion...

I have never really paid attention, but what happens to Mercinaries during a civil war???

Mercenaries have a lower level loyalty than regular soldiers, so they will most likely join the rebellious forces, and if you have enough of the most modern sorts of soldiers, then they aren't too hard to beat.

So is it feasible then to hire a large number of good mercinaries prior to a civil war and have them absorbed into your army after the war???

I only hire them depending on how I need them. If I'm in a costly war then I hire a crapload of them

I always take the rebels - they seem to have more forces, usually. Civil wars are a cool alternative to foreign wars. But keeping wome forces for further foreign wars is longtermview I do like. Plus being the rebel versus the law is cool.

Other than that, I do'nt care who is my king. "Breeding" seems anachronic to me.

I only really seem to get rebellions when I hire mercenaries.

Damn stirrers.

I have never engineered a civil war, they generally just happen out of the blue for me & I get left having to choose just based on what is displayed.

In my current VI campaign, I was faced with going the side of my 9* general & his army, or the King & the rest of the army.
I chose the King but strangely the 9* general was left on my side???

I'm playing a game now when the Golden Horde whipped an army in Georgia badly at the precise moment that my old, influential king died.

There was a huge civil war. Half my provinces were in revolt including many of the richest. The revotls spread from Leon to Syria to Constantinople. To make matters worse, a few small Jihads that joined the counterattack against the Horde suffered another defeat, sparking another civil war. I couldn't tell if there were two rival rebelliious factions at once or if the first one just got bigger, not that it made a whole lot of difference.

However, I had numerous Jihad markers, allowing me to declare Jihad on most of the rebellious provinces. Not only were the Jihads successful, but the the big majority of the rebels surrendered peacefully to the holy warriors.

My rookie Turkish sultan gained influence and piety for launching so many successful Jihads. This made the next round of multiple Jihads much bigger than the first.

Within two years, every province from Algeria to Nicaea was completely under control. An army in Cordoba was holding out, too.

Within five years, thanks to the boosted second round of Jihads, I crippled the Golden Horde, Constantinople was also re-conquered and my empire was bigger than it was when I started. A little bribery, plunder from reconquered provinces and control of the Mediterranean didn't hurt, either.

I was also able to kick the Spanish back out of northern Spain, where they had made some progress during my civil war. That attack contined and stripped Aquitaine and Provence from the Spanish, too. Then I bribed away Sweden and Norway, mostly with florins I'd plundered or ransomed from the Spanish.

I play mostly with HRE and this seems to be a faction with a greater affinity for civil wars than any other http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

The additional problem is, as you will probably agree, that German kings gain influence very, very hard, and almost always have crappy offspring. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

As for siding, I always go with the king. The traitors must be defeated and brought to horrid, slow death they deserve... You know which place in hell the traitors, according to Dante, will take? Now you got it...

Just had a civil war as the Byzantines. Battle of Constatinople, 1339 (I had only Constantinople left, all my provinces had rebelled or to the east been taken by Turks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif ), I fought a huge peasant army of 9000 men http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif I had 4000 Byzantine Inf./Kataphraktoi, and I won With only 700 casualties to the Rebels 8500-something http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Greetings,
How comes that mercenaries join the civil war?
I would expect they would stay loyal as long they're payed well.
They don't have ideals like normal generals have they only want money, money and more money.

You have to be careful with civil wars, if you are currently engaged in a war with other factions, they can eat you up bit by bit without giving you a chance to consolidate the rebellious counties.

Other than that, it's rather fun to experience a civil war. You get to see which nobles are on your side, and which side rebel http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
