Hi just wondering how popular each game was?

Do you have NTW?

Currently playing VI, but I have the original MTW.

I also own a thing called Shogun Total War Warlord Edition (=Mongol Invasion), but I just unistalled it to free up some space on my hard drive. This was a fairly traumatic event for me.

I made a run at buying a laptop or second computer just for Shoggie, but after a vicious pummeling by the wife unit I came to see that was bad idea.

Regretting? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
Why?
Old graphics?
Simplistic strategic side?
What? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I really like it
In some ways superior to MTW...

All four.

I'm with Aymar - I love them all, but sometimes STW feels like a sportscar to MTW's 4 x 4.

I think both games accurately reflect the different character and mobility of 'Japanese' and European Middle Age warfare.

Hope RTW does'nt feel like truck driving. Looking at Time Commander it could even be tank(er) driving

Shogun was cool back when it came out. Back then, I picked it up because I thought it was a copy of the board game Shogun (now called Samurai Swords, very sweet game). It wasnt. However, it was good enough to spark my interest, otherwise I would have never bought MTW, and thus you would have never seen KekvitMod.
But then MTW came out and spoiled me. In STW, all clans were the same, except for minor bonuses and starting locations.
Plus it intoduced 'super-units' into the game, specifically Geishas. Once you got your Geisha out on the board stalking an enemy daimyo, that was game. Sure, you needed to wait awhile, but she will eventually kill him.

It's a nice game for about an hour, then it gets repetitous with little strategy. I honestly have no love for it now.

I have all four too Like them for different reasons BUT one thing is still the same: I quit games when I get to big because it just gets boring. Otherwise the TW-series is a great game over which I have lost countless sleepinghours, he he

If nearly 63% on the 29th. Nov.(see above) have STW - why oh why arent there more people in STW MP ?

Is it that people fear its a vets club ? It cant be that people think its an inferior game. Is it just that we're lemmings and go where the crowd goes ? Do people really think its less skillful ?

Its a great pity. What do you feel ?

I have all four. STW was great when it came out, however the lack of unique units/strategy options makes it look antiquated alongside MTW/VI. Every war becomes a case of who massed the most reserves, not who made the most intelligent troop selections/had the best strategy. I find MTW/VI has far more scope for imagination and variation. The only problem is that unlike the real world, one faction or another rapidly becomes overpowering and the game gets boring after this (usually the Spanish or French)

NTW is a brilliant mod The same problems as MTW/VI, with the added lack of an effective 'southern' opponent (the Ottoman Empire) however this is going to be fixed, or so I believe. Regardless, still hours of fun for those who have played MTW to death http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif
My vote would have to go to NTW as MTW/VI was getting a little repetitive.

Welcome aboard Pertuarbo. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Good point about STW vs MTW. The MTW SP campaign was such an improvement over STW that there is still discussion about the SP campaign two years after the game came out. With STW, there was virtually no discussion about the SP campaign two months after the game came out. I think this is why the online MP game and the clan scene were so much more active (or so it seemed) in the Shogun days...or at the very least, one of the reasons.

Never met the Hojo-horde?

Other than that: I've got Shogun: warlords Edition only, but I'm thinking of buying MTW when fancy a new game. As far as I can see, STW was a great game when it was released (excepting the few odd quirks and the Geisha). MTW's strategic game is probably better (as it ought to be, since it is a sequel), but the battles aren't. The battle engine of Shogun was pretty much complete (MTW seems to have some minor improvements), only MTW has more units. Too many units, which are often too much alike.

I have:

- Shogun: Total War, no expansion.
- Medieval: Total War + Viking Invasion expansion pack.

Both have their pro's and con's.

Hopefully Rome: Total War will top them both (wouldn't surprise me in the least bit http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif).

Also have (at the moment) Napoleonic: Total War, barroca's Shogun: Total War mod for MTW and Wes's MedMod 2.04 (moddifing it more and more over time to my own satisfaction) installed.

I have MTW and VI.

I wouldn't simply have time for Shogun. I have had the MTW for about a year but I am still playing vanilla single player MTW because it is so much fun http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif The strategic AI could be better though. It is fairly competent but not challenging. (However, considering the complexity of the game, the CA has done amazing job http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif ) For this reason I think I will try MedMod next and Shogun has to wait .... indefinitely I am afraid.

I seem to have gotten them all at about the same times as Aymar de Bois Mauri, with the difference that I bought MTW the moment the first patch became avaliable. There was so much griping in the forums at the time that I decided to wait for the patch. Oh, and I also had to get a computer that could handle it

I still love the look and feel of STW, but I feel that MTW, with its complex mix of factions, units, and time periods, has much more replay value.

I wish they would re-publish Shogun, say as an add-on to R:TW. I'd shell out another $20 US without a second thought.

I didn't really know about STW. MTW came to me by accident... I fly to China and Japan from the East Coast of the US quite a bit for business. That's about 14 hours locked in a plane, add to that the lack of evening entertainment over there... you get the idea. So I was asking around work who had a new brand of crack for me (to show you how addicted to a particular game I become, the game I had JUST tired of in February was Pharaoh). Somebody brought in MTWVI and I haven't seen my wife, my friends, my family ever since... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif I suppose I could go back and buy STW to backfill, but as I'm more of a fan of the strategy, and I understand that wasn't as developed in STW, I probably won't.

My 2 cents.

I was disappointed in the previous games I had bought, after a few months I would get bored and have to go out to buy a new one. Did some research on the web that brought me to this site. Read all the threads and decided to buy MTW in April, 2002. The only other game I have purchased since was VI as soon as it was released. I have a limited amount of gaming time, mostly on the weekends late at night, and it is all dedicated to MTW-VI. Based on time spent playing to acquisition costs, these games are cheap.

Haven't purchased STW because I thought it would just be a less advanced version of MTW. Can’t wait for RTW.
