In the description of vikings it says they are only truely vunerable when they break formation, so do they get a bonus for staying in formation like spearmen do?
Before a battle why will it sometimes say it will be a fine day then rain? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
Your weatherman must enjoy the rain. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Imprecise question means long answers http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
1. Vikings, as those Novogrod (in Early) and Danes have:
These guys are called Viking in game, but stat-file named it HouseCarles. They don't have support bonus as spears and pikes have. They use axes.
2. Viking as a prefix to all units the Viking Faction has during Viking Era:
It depends on which one use spears.
VikingThralls: spears, ranks to have full bonus: 2.
VikingRaiderCavalry: cav
JomVikings: axes
VikingKarls: swords
VikingHuscarls: axes
VikingLansmenn: axes
So, only VikingThralls use Spears thus having rank bonus.

Songs by Garbage and Jimi Hendrix come to mind...
The weatherman cannot be trusted. Either this is a representation of the uncertainty in weather prediction in that era, or a bug in the game. Whatever it is, do not trust cloudy, hazy days. Always pick the fine day with the clear sky and as little haze as possible. The haze is a rough indicator on how soon it will rain.
As far as Vikings go, in my experience they are just another shock infantry unit and do not recieve any abnormal bonuses from the Hold Formation command. While the unit description talks about the Vikings' shieldwalls, it really is not represented in the game. They fight best on Engage, and should only be in Hold Formation if they have to take a cavalry charge, and after that they should be put back on Engage.
If I am not mistaken, the game developers were/are primarily British. In many parts of England, a fine day includes substantial rain.

It never rains, but it pours http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif bluntly put.

They have tweaked the rain somewhat. It doesn't seem to rain as much now as it did before the first patch. It almost always rained (except in the desert) before the patch. Now it will sometimes drizzle or rain on a "fine day" but not as frequently. It feels more like real life now. It might appear to be a great day, then turn overcast and rain in short order (and perhaps for not very long.)
Back to the other topic ""In the description of vikings it says they are only truely vunerable when they break formation, so do they get a bonus for staying in formation like spearmen do?""
shouldnt there be some units that are less succeptable to arrows in close formation if they lock there shields and replicate the Romans tortoseshell. Wondered this for a while but never bothered posting about it
One thing to note, gentlemen;
If your melee heavy in your forces, rain can be your friend against an opponent thats archer heavy, eh?
Especially true in bridge crossing battles....... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I dont think that is a bug. Makes the battle more unpredictable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

This is sometimes quite useful when it rains intermittently. Say the enemy has many archers you sit outside their range and then charge when it begins to rain, then rout them. By the time their reinforcements arrive the weather has cleared up and your archers have nice shooting weather. Of course it is unpredictable and unreliable but when it works yay

Not true anymore \o/ GLOBAL WARMING \o/ In fact over this summer Britain and most of Europe were having record levels of heat, on the other hand New York suffered record amounts of rainfall. Guess which I was in http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Well... you can't really say medieval weathermen were accurate... the closest things to satellites in those days were cows. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

And that occasional swallow flying low and the goatbeard clouds (coldfront is comming in). http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
To predict an entire day was almost impossible, so you got most rights if you use a method that IS working in MTW. The weather today is the same as yesterday http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif (it's true you get more than 50% right using this method)

I used that method for this last summer. I was 100% for months.
Thunderbolts and lightning are the best for a nice big meat grinder battle. It always seems more dramatic with God's own orchestra beating away in the background.
I still see little snow. Is that still fixed on the fourth battle of a turn?

No, but you still need atleast two battles on the same turn before you get snow http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/snowman.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/santa.gif
