My clan mate Barocca messed with the sound files back when the game first came out. He replaced some of the shouted orders with bugle calls and some of the music with bagpipes (he is of Scotish ancestry).
If you are interested in supplementing shogunnewbie1's modifications with Barocca's, here is a link to B's website to learn more: http://www.geocities.com/shade571/

umm very .... think about your field of view .... you can see a limited distance and width now with edited sounds I can hear you give commands to troops im not looking @ http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
I play one game and i hear " ATTACK " I look around and see charging cav into my guns so I counter now I i never hurd the sound I would have lost thos guns I think its about a 5%+ advantage cuz you can hear allmost everymovement
could be described as cheating, or at least dis-honourable...
real good thinking newbie!
I like it...

"Situation excellente. J'attaque!"
nice idea shogunnewbie1,
nothing wrong with upping the volume,
i think,
besides in real life a general would be able to see and hear what was happening a lot easier than we can in the game,
I made my changes to allow me to Know what orders were being issued around me, i found the japanese commands impossible to work with,
The Beauty with making a personal edit of the table config file is YOU can decide which sounds to change, which to increaes in volume, and which ones you don't want to hear at all,
The difference between STW and STW-WE/MI is the actual number of audible sounds and orders has been reduced,
this is to help minimise lag,
- less work for your processor and sound card.
So do be carefull which orders you 'add' or 'remove'
a minimalist approach is the best way,
i personally remove fire (a unit firing issues this command with each volley)
i also removed 'impact' sounds, again each volley creates an 'impact'
I believe my instructions on how to change the sounds and music are pretty clear and easy to follow,
plus You can decide what sounds to change and music you want to listen to,
I do like shogunnewbie1's idea of changing the distance, very neat,
would it get confusing in mulitiplayer(2v2 or more)?
and
what about processor load, because you'd be hearing EVERYONES orders from all over the map?
perhaps test it in MP a little and decide on a usefull compromise - or have 2 table config files, one for SP and one for MP,
hmmm,
anyone want to write a tidy little GUI to manage the music and sounds?

Gah!
You removed the impact sounds!?!?!
That's the best part of the game!!!
Aside from the cutting off of heads, that is ...
Gah!
my favourite impact sounds were the ones they did not use,
i don't have my PC at the moment, i'm on a borrowed machine,
but if you have a trawel through the original STW sounds folder and look for anything with impact in it you'll find Dirty Harry letting loose in a kitchen,
a great laugh...

processor load ??? bahhh this game engine is so old man you can do what every ou want to it
and for ... "hmmm,
anyone want to write a tidy little GUI to manage the music and sounds? "
music !!! music bad ! but mongoling throught singing is really cool tho ! look for " Deep In The Heart Of Tuva "Tuvan throat singing or " THROAT SINGING - Mongolian "
I allready made a patch thats ez to install and most people should get the idea and if they don't like mine they can change it
also is there andthing elase I can edit ??? besides UNIT SPRITES and SOUNDS ? " for multiplayer help "
shogunnewbie1
even a T-Bird 1000, with 512Mb RAM, a 64Mb Vid and Cable access can still lag on a 4v4MP.
4v4 MP = Thats is a hell of a lot of sprites for the system to manage.
In an SP game it's not an issue at all, but whatever you change for SP in the way of sounds and music carries over into MP, and MP is where such issues become critical.
Also not everyone has the time or patience to fiddle around editing - hence the desire for a tidy GUI to make it simple,
thats why Hecose wrote a neat little utility for creating custom campaigns. also why there are log-file readers and several other utils available.
for SP, knock yourself out,
for MP - be cautious.

Hi guys,
So are you saying that in general the sound effects aren't loud enough, or you don't like the fact that I've made it so you can't hear somebody shouting when they are 500 meters away?
We've changed the code a bit, so that you'll still be able to hear stuff when it's really far away, but'll it'll be VERY quiet (which is fairly realistic).
Also, make sure you set the audio to the high quality setting, as this changes the number of channels that the game uses. The more channels, the more sound effects you hear (I find battles sound better on the high setting). Of course this means a bit more of a load on the CPU, but it's only a bit.
I can still make changes in Medieval, so post a list of things you'd like to hear, and not to hear.

really I never play 4vs4 to @#$ing laggy but your saying the lag is from performence and not upstreem ? I meater a 2vs2 game and the max upload was 9K so I know I can host 2vs2 and have enuf banwidth anyways
** Can't host on a proxy ?**
I had to take the host off NAT for winroute to get it to @#$#$ing work ok shougn runs off ports around 61000-62000 and on 8794 try that and if it dont work its more then just ports
If you have or had a proxy and need or know of ways to get to host games on your proxy let me know
