View Full Version : Crusade units, building them is an urban legend?

Well I have been playing this game from time to time and I mostly focus on the campaign part of the game.

The problem I am having is that I think that it could be possible to build all or some of the units that appears in the crusades, like the Spanish knight (what they now are called).

If you read the description on the Spanish you can see a phrase close to “You can build them after a successful crusade” (or something close to it).

But it doesn’t matter how many successful crusades, or if I got one active in the province, the option to buy crusade units don’t appear.

I kind of start to think that this “building crusade units” is some kind of urban legend, but a confirmation that it the case would be nice.

So the question is “Can you get crusade units, like the Templar Knights or Order foot soldiers” any other way then having them appear in a crusade when you create it or absorb them when moving thru a province?”

So the answer is YES.
You can specify building requirements of any unit in unitstats.

The ability to build crusade troops after a successful crusade was removed quite late in the development of the game, like for example the ability to build chivalric foot knights. As a result, some things wasn't properly edited.

But as Eastside Character said, it's easy to edit the game so they are buildable.

You can add the building requirements to the CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11 and then you can build them. They can't be built in the original game, even after a crusade. What they mean is the units will be available after a crusade is successful, ie you can use them like regular units after the crusade disbands.

If you get the GNOME editor then you can use it to edit the CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11 easily. Column 17 is where the building requirements are listed.

Enjoy

Or you could just download a mod to do that for you *coughKekvitModcough*

I think I do like the fact that I could get access to crusader units only through a crusade. This gives incentive to crusade a lot for catholic faction. One of an easy way to win is to launch waves of crusades and get freebee (everyone love free stuffs) through crusading.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the replies.

It was not that I necessarily needed those units in my armies that were driving me nuts, it was the thought that they could be built and I just hadn’t figured out how.

It was very annoying and frankly had me desperately pressing all sort of things and trying different combinations just to see if it was possible.

Now at least I know the truth and it is very comfortable and I finally feel at peace.

I guess I just have to crusade a lot to get those order infantry guys…

(…I am not ready to mod the game yet, since my experiences with gamemods, is that the mod normally tends to destabilize the game somewhat. And since I haven’t read up on how “mod friendly” MTW is, I will save that to later)

…Again, thanks for the replies…

Greetings and welcome Mishm. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif You are a rare one indeed. It is uncommon (or so it seems) to accept the game as it is and be at peace. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif Most want to want to get under the hood and tweak the game to their liking.

Criticizing software (read as: testing) and sometimes tweaking them my self (Programming) is my profession. Which means I have been do it 8 am to 5 pm for years.

So when I get home, it is nice to simply relax and just accept the game as it is or buy something else I like.

However, that is not a problem with MTW since I find the quality of the game experience to be exceptional and I keep coming back to it from time to time and each time I do, I discover something new. Like last night I noticed a new fraction appearing for the first time.

The idea to combining the strategy aspect and the tactical aspect of the game is very fun, since it gives each battle a purpose and importance that I rather like.

Don’t get me wrong, I know how important it is for the software developer to get feedback from the audience.

I also I think that those of you who are constantly proposing game improvements are doing a tremendous job, since you are helping the game maker producing a better product that then will reach me and I will enjoy even more.

So keep up the good work, both game constructors and improvement suggestioneers…

Nicely said and reflects my views on it too. I was a programmer too and had a similar philosophy. When I got home from work I had this computer, entertain me please attitude. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I am in the samp camp whih Gregoshi and Mishm. Although I am retired and dissabled now and spend a lot of time on other programming tasks. I like the game pretty much as it exists. I havn't even played all of the factions in the early game yet. After all just keeping up with you guys on the forum is a full time job.

I still am a programmer. I involved myself in low-level modding when I was low on work, but I usually avoid doing the same thing at home that at work... even if managing bank cards isn't my conception of a game.
