joining online battles

hi can any one let me know how i would go about joining some online battles.

It's really pretty straightforward, chap. Get yourself the 1.1 patch if you have plain MTW, or the 2.01 patch if you have MTW VI, then start up the game and take a good look at the mainmenu.
When you log on to gamespy for the first time, you need to specify a nickname, password as well as your CD key. After that has been done, you will be logged in to the MTW multiplayer lobby, where you can either join or host games.
If you want to join a game, click on it in the gamelist and then on the join button.

You might want to take a look at the table of contents or do some topic searches if you require more detailed info or run into trouble.

To add to what Brutal said:

1) if you don't have a GameSpy account, go into GameSpy Arcade and set one up first. Once you've set up your account, I think you are better off getting into GameSpy via MTW/VI as mentioned above.

2) make sure you type in your CD key correct, especially zeros and Os.
