I have STW (not the warlord edition), am I correct in saying that there is no way to disband units?

Um, I think the unit disbanding/execution feature has been around since the original release of STW. I'm not too sure right now as I have only the Warlord edition.
To disband a unit you have to select it in the unit details/buildings panel at the bottom of the screen and then the little execution icon should appear on the left-hand side of the panel, next to the unit training and building construction buttons.

Hello vince. Welcome and thanks for joining the Org. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I think you may be right about not being able to delete units. It has been a while since I've played STW, so I checked the manual and there was no mention of deleting units. If there is, it would present itself on the unit parchment when you right-click on the unit. You could also try selecting the unit and then pressing the delete key, though I doubt that will work.

nope, no way to disband units...
that's a pretty serious flaw. i really don't know how the game designers could have missed something this obvious. so the only way i can make room for new improved units is by attacking with the old ones and deliberately letting them get killed...

Can you retrain them by placing them in the build queue

nope, disbanding and retraining were both added with the Warlord Edition.

yep. first thing i noticed when I got mongol invasion was the little man stabbing himself in the corner. and yeah it seems odd how they could have missed something like that.
