Trying to log on (or off) has become a joke Does anyone who matters know? Or care? Is anything being done?

Gah, the same thing happens to me. I have to reregister each time I log on and reboot if I wanna relog.

Logging on and returning to foyer after game has become pitifully slow. I really would like to see this game played over a decent server http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Gah

Logging on, even logging off very slow. I still relog after each game.

If a game drops (still frequent) I frequently get an error when I try to relog. Not sure if it is the server, my connection, or computer, but interesting to see that others encounter similar probs.

yes we all have the same concern with Gamespy. The easiest solution is to retype your pw every time you log on. It works http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

one interesting note..... (ive both 1.1 and 2.01 installed) after switching from 1.1 to 2.01 I entered at normal speed (wonder for how long, or if it was a fluke)..

RTW isn't going to be any different. I don't seen anything from the developer/publisher that indicates RTW will have better networking performance. I think they've actually said that performance will be the same as MTW. Right now I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that 50% of your time online with MTW/VI is wasted. I don't think that many people have this amount of time to waste on a game.

I also don't understand why you get dropped from a battle if you loose connect to the GameSpy server. It's just a matchmaking server, and isn't needed once the battle starts because the game is peer-to-peer. STW battles didn't stop when the EA server went offline. You didn't know the EA server was down until the battle was over.

If the logon problems come back next weekend, then I would say the GameSpy server is overloaded. You could set up a personal computer as a server for a community this small and get better performance than the commercial servers. Too bad CA can't publishing the game themselves and running their own server. The fine STW and WE/MI games are going to disappear from online play in Feb 2004 because the publisher is shutting down the matchmaking servers. If CA had put a direct ip option in their game, it would have lived on indefinitely as a multiplayer internet game.

Well, let's look at the bright side of it guys.

Some players here never played STW/MI online but the oldies should remember well the online performance of STW: 3v3 on a 56k modem were *almost* unplayable Before the first 1.12 patch (late 2000 if I remember) even a 2v2 would lag on a modem

In MTW/VI one can actually *host* a 3v3 with a modem without big problems. It's true though, the badass refreshing of the playerlist/gameslist and the looong log in/out periods are annoying: but at least it's mostly smooth when you get down to playing. And I like that when I remember the tremendous lag back in STW.

As for future releases, I don't know what the problem is really? I play Neverwinter Nights online and its also on Gamespy: no lag, few disconnections and millisecond logging in/out. If I'm not mistaken, direct IP is also supported.

Ummmm bad login-logout coding?

I suppose the main bottleneck would be the checking and confirming of the cd-key combined with username and such...

Since everyone tends to relog after a game, when lots of games are completed at same time, I suppose that results in some relogging lag...

Erm tera i had a 36k modem all through shogun and played over 300 4v4's http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It must be attributet to stupid coding, that shouldn't be a bottleneck. A server should not lag even when with a 100 login requests.

Anyone know the gamespy protocols? I understand you can configure what lobby server to use, and I am very tempted to write a replacement, if i know that would fix all these lobby problems once and for all.

Sometimes for me it takes a while to log on and it will say log on error?. Also takes a while to get in a game, they say this is cause of all the different eras? Well in that case i'd rather just have one balanced era...

And i had a 56k modem in stw and played 1,000+ 3v3 and 4v4 games that ran fine, as in stable not low frame rate. I never minded the slow game speed, cause it helped make me known as a great player and now in mtw i'm getting my arse kicked to much without the slow speed. I've gotten in the habit of controlin each unit and always end up getting a few units in bad spots, when i should just mass charge more units and focus only on a few units at once and not all.

hehe I also never mind a slowdown or two, as it gives time to look over the battlefield better... I notice a slowdown logging in and out sometimes but not always. I dont relog after every game... is it really necessary?

It just refreshes the foyer, apart from that there's no real reason unless you are the host of course

Lately I restart the entire game instead of logoff / relog...( ctrl + alt +del , kill process the restart ) ...

Some games are very slow without any good reason , like 2 vs 2 with ppl wiz broadband who I know do not lag in my games ... its random too , one game lags next 1 is ok than lag again http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I didn't mean the frame rate depending on PC performance...I meant the network code itself. I've played with a 33.6k for two years and 4v4s were much slower in STW than in MTW, in terms of speed related to connection.

Maybe RTW will borrow the perhaps better foyer of STW along with the actual playing network code of MTW.

the foyer .. i really want to go inot a swearing rant here .. but i wont, basically the game is much better in terms of the lag, the battles run without "lag delay" but a lot of the time lately they just seem to freeze http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

"logging on/off" is absolutely crazy it just takes an obsurd amount of time. All other games i have played dont seem to have these same issues. Then we have all the other issues that have not been fixed from MTW1.0. are 3 patches (one costing £15) not enough to justify trying to fix these things?

The other night i managed to play one full game in 3 hours. if it was like this all the time, for me, it is just not even worth playing anymore.

Strange thing is when i play in mornings sometimes, when only ~20 ppl online things work much better http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif cut us more of the pie GS http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
