View Full Version : Creative Assembly Attack or Defend on flat maps.
Attacking is harder that defending?
So which to do?
On flat maps, believe it or not, at least myself, but I think most vets agree with me, that attacking is just better than defending.
Why? First of all defending is boring. In attacking pure skill is shown. Secondly, in attacking on flat maps you can manouver and set-up your army in the perfect way; being flexible. Defenders tend to be very static, which often is their ticket to death...

The attacker has a psychological advantage when the defender waits in place to fight.
The defender must be as aggressive as the attacker, or it is his disadvantage.
Exception: when the conditions of the ground favour the defender sufficiently, there is no need to maneuver. The ground will defeat the attacker.
You do get a morale bonus when you have a height advantage (or am I wrong again and should go back to sarcasm)... so do you get some sort of morale bonus when charging???
Should you get a bonus. I'm sure in Med:TW the Knights should get a morale pump as they charge in for their first engagement.

Most people are afraid of height. So those who charge down hill get a morale penalty instead.
Attacking offcourse. Defender has only a slight advntage. Also you get the weather picking option. Don't like what anymore though since guns fire at all times now http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I think if the defender keeps cool he has to move only tiny bits. The attacker has to do more maneuvering, ->his troops tire, or if he tries to attack, he will die at the naginata lines of a good defender. But well, if the defender isn't cool enough, if he isn't skilled, the attacker has an advantage, because a unskilled defender will loose control under attack, or if the enemy maneuvers a lot.

Right on both counts Papewaio. Very perceptive. There is a small morale bonus for being uphill of all enemy, and a big one for charging. The one for charging though can be cancelled by certain events, such as taking a point blank face full of lead from a gun unit.
As is the case with driving your car down the road...
1. The best Defense is a good Offense
2. The best Offense is a good Defense

Make your combat stance your everyday stance.
Make your everyday stance your combat stance.
i near always attack as well, so on such maps there isnt a difference between att or def...
but the attacker has always 1 advance, he know when he start to fight, the defender has to react, and like a carcrash he needs some secs to get it all on the way...
im an attacker i love to bring the pressure...
