haven't played this game for ages, and this one issue is driving me nuts, especialy as I couldn't work it out when I first bought it, and had to ask here
cmon guys. How do I remove a governor title from a useless peasant?
Drag and drop an Emmisary on the desired general.

ah yes. the most unobvious thing ever to be left out of a game manual

AFAIK the manual says what the emmisary can do, and I think that it mentions removing titles...

Snowhobit is right, it appears on page 38, the fourth bullet on emmisarys.
Don't beat yourself up, though, its easy to miss. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
You can also assassinate him, persecute him with an Inquisitor, send him off to die a lonely death in a battle somewhere, or simply disband his unit.

God, I love doing that Spies can be lots of fun if you use them properly. My favorite use, though, is still sending them to try and open the castle gate so that my men can ransack the place..... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

What factosrs allows a spy to open enemy gates? I have tried it several times and always the probability of success is zero, whether it is against large garrisons or small.

Spies valour above all else...
The size of the fort and the rank of the enemy general are also two probable factors, but I can't tell 100% for sure.

Honestly, I really don't know. It is hard to do, that's for certain; I only have something like a 5-10% success rate. I think the main factor (not surprisingly) is your spy's valour. He needs at least a couple stars before he has any real chance of opening the gates.
I also suspect that a higher-level castle makes it much more difficult as well. I have no proof, but there does seem to be a correlation between the size of the fortification and my spies' chances of success. To date, the vast majority of times that my spies have pulled it off (and those are still relativly few) are on forts and keeps. In all the games I've played, the tactic has never worked on a Fortress. I have broken into a Castle 2, maybe 3 times; and in what I can only define as a minor miracle (or perhaps not so minor ), my spy was once actually able to slip past the gatehouse of a Citadel. These successes are very, very rare, however; and in the case of my spy getting past the Citadel, I must be honest and admit that it took something like 7-8 times reloading that turn before he pulled it off. (And no, I don't normally reload turns; I find it a very cheesy tactic.)
So as a general rule, it's really not worth trying to send in a spy to open the gates. I do it more for the fun factor involved, and the whole "wouldn't it be cool if he pulled it off?" aspect. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

The main factors are the valour of the spy and siege time. The more time has elapsed, and the closer to fall the castle is, the higher the infiltration percentage of your spy.

So have you noticed whether the size of the castle affects a spy's chances of success, or have I just been imagining that it makes a difference? It does seem to; but like I said earlier, I'm not sure--especially since it doesn't work very often.....

I haven't noticed it, I usually resolve sieges in another way, more akin to my login name. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
It could be possible, but IIRC the points I stated in my previous post are the main factors as have been found out by the patrons here over time. Perhaps you can do a little topic search and see if you can come up with some more info on this which I didn't remember..

I've noticed that time interval for siege is important. Had an army start a siege of a citadel in Leon with just 1 royal knight inside. Took me 6 turns for my 3 valour spy to hit 66% chance of success on opening the gates.
