Re-inforcing with Mercs

I'm playing with VI and the latest patches and I can't seem to re-inforce my units using men from merc units, I know how to re-inforce from normal units and re-train etc. I've heard other people mention it in other threads, but I can't do it.

So I thinks to myself Who would know, where can I find the people who play this game continuously (as I have been known to do) and know all the answers?

I do not know all of the answers, but this one is easy.

You can't retrain or merge or reinforce mercs. You can marry one of your daughters to a merc, but you cannot make them a Governor.

They are disposable, disband 'em when they get depleted.

Cheers Ichi, but that's not quite what I meant.

The problem I have is with Alan cavalry, I'd heard once they're numbers were depleted you could use troops from a merc unit to replace your on fallen troops. I don't know if you need to do something in particular for this to happen or if I'm missing something simple. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/snowman.gif

No, this isn't possible anymore, I think combining Merc units was only possible in the v1.0 version of MTW.

As it is now, you can hire mercenary units, but if this unit loses men, there is no way to replace them, neither by retraining, nor by combining with other mercenary units nor normally trained units of the same kind, this includes trying to strengthen your own units with mercenary troops.

Usually it is best to disband them once the unit drops below 50% of its strength (unless they are of very high valour) and look for fresh mercenary units in the taverns.

I do remember at one time I did manage to merge mercanary units and in a future campaign it was no longer possible

I think the realism the designers are trying to add is that when your hire mercenaries, you hire a leader and his team, who only follow him.

As said previously, you should only use mercenaries as disposable troops, they cost way more to support.
