View Full Version : I have played my first game today

I took a mythology class this semester, and it has gotten me very interested in the medieval epics. I'm currently reading Poem of the Cid. So of course when I got this game I decided to play as the Spanish, thinking that perhaps El Cid might be one of my generals.

Unfortunately, no, he wasn't. I attacked the Aroganese and took them out of the game, then I thought, Well, the good Campeador is probably in Valencia.

I was right. I attacked and conquered the province, capturing El Cid in the process. I was faced with the option of executing him.

How in the world could I ever bring myself to hang the good Campeador? It was simply unthinkable. I let him go instead.

I looked very briefly at another thread in this forum and someone said something about bribing El Cid to be your general. Anyone know how that works?

Man, let me tell you...I would really like to relive some of El Cid's conquests from the poem in the game.

I don't think I should have to bribe him, though In the poem (and I'm only in the Third Cantar just now) he says that he is loyal to Alfonso even though he has banished him. And he sent the king three gifts of a hundred horses and probably some other neat stuff, too.

I'd say that the real Rodrigo Diaz of Vivar was a lot different than the one in the poem...but I wouldn't know that. Here in the United States, some jerk decided that students shouldn't be taught world history until they're sophomore (which I am, but I don't have the class until next semester). Oh well, a fellow history enthusiast friend of mine has a book on European history that he will let me borrow during Christmas break...should learn all about medieval Spain, then

I tried attacking the Almohads, but that didn't work. Also, something happened to Portugal. I thought it belonged to me, but apparently it doesn't. I might just have been imagining things, though.

Is it just me, or do events seem to take place more or less the same way in each game? I played one game before the one I've been talking about where basically I didn't know what to do and was just dying, but it seems to me that the French find that relic in turn five or so every time, and the Pope always gives me 1000 florins. Is this just a coincidence, or will these things always happen? It would be nice if it were a bit more random.

Welcome to The Org, Haethurn http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

First, dig around a little in the FAQs, the library, and old threads and you will find the answers to a lot of questions. There are threads on playing almost every faction, and on lots of game aspects.

Bribing: Take your emissary and drop him on El Cid (or any other enemy General). You will be advised of the amount of florins required. Dropping an emissary on your own Generals will relieve them of titles.

Portugal: Is an unruly province. Keep a couple hundred peasants and a few good units (I keep about 300 guys there) and keep the taxes at normal. Build a castle and other improvements, put a spy and a Border Fort there, and you'll be OK. Keep the province loyalty for provinces above 100, at least. Hit the shift key to see which provinces are loyal.

Events: Some events are hard-wired, and this does detract from the game. Learn to anticiapte them, and you'll be OK.

Good Luck
