A friend and i played our first game over the net on multiplayer last night. This was after opening all the inward ports on my router cause there was no info in the manual on which ports are required... grr hate doing that. I've now found the excellent info here http://www.totalwars.net/routers...._us.htm (http://www.totalwars.net/routersettings/here_are_some_tips_for_router_us.htm) so all is well.
My question is where the hell is everyone? We jumped in to gamespy multiplayer through the game menus and got into a resoundingly quiet room...? There was only the 2 of us there. No problem for a little while but I suspect James will be wanting to play someone he can beat before too long

Are we missing something?

What version are you playing?
Be sure to get the 2.01 patch for VI...

We are both using Vikings and I'm pretty sure its patched up cause the option to update on the multiplayer screen is greyed out.
Also having taken a close look at here_are_some_tips_for_router_us I am somewhat concerned. Is it really neccesary to open all those ports AND then put my PC in a DMZ?
Look in the upper left corner of the Main Menu of MTW (the Main Menu gives you choices like Single Player, Multi Player, Options) to see your version. It should say 2.01. If not you will need to download and install.
I've never ported a router, don't even know what a DMZ is, so it makes me wonder what you are doing. Last night there were 40-80 people in the GameSpy lobby.
good luck

Thanks Ichi I'll check it out tonight.
DMZ is DeMilitarized Zone its a configuration you can tell a router to give machines attached to it so that they can exchange info through all ports both ways to other machines. It can be dangerous securitywise is all. It all mentioned here

I would not take the fact that the update on the multiplayer screen is greyed out as a definite proof you are patched up.
Ichi is right; check your version on the starting screen, if it says 2.0; then you need to download the 2.01 patch
Download page at totalwar.com (http://www.totalwar.com/community/download.htm)
Regarding the router; it's a problem if you want to host a game. If you want to join a game, you don't have to do anything.
So if you are concerned with security, just don't host games...

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif does anyone still play STW the first one. and what is currently the best total war game out there. and dont say all of them because there all great.
From what I hear STW was a great game in it's day, and still is quite a lot of fun to play. I'm sure you can find plenty of people on this forum that play it.
AsRomantic notions aside and from a strictly analytical point of view, it seems to me that Medievel: Total War is the best of the two.
The strategy of the game, and development of the game are at a higher level. There is more options for what you as a player can do.

The majority, I'd say. Some are still playing plain MTW v1.1, but the lobbies for MTW and VI are merged, so you can see those people too, but not the games they host.

Glad to hear that. Shall look forward to meeting some of you online.
Also can you tell me if this is the best place to be discussing the game? Are there any other pro-active sites with regard to the muliplayer side of the game?

Here on the .org, the Jousting Fields and Barracks subforums are for MP only, the Totalwars.net is the prime site for all kinds of MP issues, in my opinion. You will find almost all regular MP players posting there.
There may be other sites, but frankly, I didn't bother.

more and more people are playing with the vikings expansion. I'd say half and half maybe, with more of the diehards on the viking side (I'm one of them):)

Well I got a couple of games in last night after applying the patch. Only weird thing was though the game still said V2.0 . I applied the patch 3 times to be sure - each time i just got a splash screen and that was it, is that right?
Also there were only 8 people in the game room last night - is that normal? I expected a whole horde of generals looking for glory
Played 2 games and thoroughly enjoyed myself despite getting my ass kicked. Lessons have been learned http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

If it says 2.0 at the upperleft corner of this screen, you are in 2.0. If it says 2.01, then you got the latest patch:
In the lowest point of the day, around 4AM EST, where Americas are sleeping, Europe just woke up and go to work/school, the number of people in foyer should be around 20. In high time, late-afternoon, early evening in Eastcoast USA and primetime Europe, I usually see over 100 players.
