Anyway heres a tale, vaguely told, of something that happened to me while back, and altough it's no great achievment, it does make me grim at the AI's stupidity...

My armies crossed swords with both the armies of the Polish King and the Prince of Novgorod, altough outnumbered 3 to 1, I positioned my troops as far back on the field as i could, and prepared to hold the field. As the battle begun I watched those two enormous Armies moving into the center of the screen...Polacs from left to right and Russians from right to left, the drums of war sounding in my ears...and suddenly...they clashed...pounding on each other, retainers against boyars, and i was left as a mere spectador while these two invading armies pounded each others guts out... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif ...I screamed fight me Take me on you Wussies, but they were too focused to notice me, and I just stood there watching http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ...after some good 5 minutes fighing, the Russian ran from the field, their forces scatered and paniked, and the Polish finally noticed my presence.
I thought Haven't they had enough?, they were half the force they started, and now I outnumbered them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
Result...I moped the field with the remains of their army, and both of their factions left me alone for quite some time.

well now for grizzys greatest acheivment. i had taken to the field of battle with 3 of my fellow (at that time) fears and against a line up of 4 good players.

i had selected a european faction (which one escapes me) and had a fairly standard army. i was on the far left side of the field with an ally behind me, i was facing up against the guy who'd turned me from a newb to a good player (ace aka aggonyace aka fearace aka wildboarace) the battle began id decided to just take ace out of the battle to leave the others 3v3.

the battle began he was setup along a hill which faced another hill with a slight dip in the middle (almost like a trench) i marched my pav arbs into range to begin the shootout, he had the slight hill advantage so every second his range advantage was gradually gaining......

i then noticed a weakness in his lines 2 spear units (order foot i think) at valor 1. i new my high valor fuedal men at arms would eat these up, and that these units werent high morale. so i got my infantry and cavalry prepared for the moment of truth......

i had taken the cavalry on my right flank a bit further to the side and lined them up diagonally facing in to his troops, and i then did the same on my left flank except due to red zone not as far from my infantry. i then sent my swordsmen in full steam double clicking behind enemy lines then manually clicking on the units as to get the charge bonus and keep them advancing in an orderly line.

this was the moment of truth my timing had to be impeccable to get this right. it was quite early on in the game so to lose would have left my allys at a major disadvantage when we were attacking a decently sized hill map as it was.

the swordsmen were about half way towards his lines, so i got my cavalry on the right flank and double clicked a reasonable distance behind his left flank, i then did the reverse on my left flank as to get my cavalry coming in diagonally. well, thankfully my timing was impeccable my sword line crashed into the enemy just as my 4 cav (2 each side) hit a sword unit and a spear unit respectively (on each side) while sword units where crashing into these unit frontally

well my timing had gone brilliantly his spears routed instantly and the 2 swords which my cav had hit went with them. he was now left with his cavalry fighting my chilvaric foot knights on the flanks and his infantry with a gap between them. im guessing at this point all his infantry were wavering and his cavalry at least uncertain.

i immediatly took the swords i had to spare now and hit his remaining infantry in the backs with them, while my cavarly smashed into his.... he was dead all his units routed 15 seconds after first hand to hand contact and only a minute after the game had started. i chased him off the map and precedded to join my fellow fears against the 3 remaining defenders

Lets see.... It must have been when i fenced off 18.000 mongols with 4.000 ruskies or maybee... wait It was the time when me, myself and I with 24 berserkers invaded south of Engle (VI)and took 5 provinces, yupp that´s it
On the other hand I think that maybee... once upon a time I was the king of France and was fighting an evenly matched German army as a defender. Halfway through the battle one after another of my troops turned tails and ran home to Paris and I was left on a bridge with 20 bodyguards. We held the foe and sent him packing, he he, Vive la France

It is not the greatest victory but a surprise one. As HRE it is time to punish Poland. They have numerous number about 1700 men in Poland so I send the Main Army with my greatest General from Vienna and a Secondary Army of 500 men from Bohemia. But when I hit the End button I see The Polish retreat from the field.. in Austria and only my Secondary Army shown up in the battle of Poland, against about 500 of them The rest of them is away to stop my main army I managed to seize Poland and then have prisoners of over 1.000 Polish and their King because they have no way to retreat from Austria

Wonder if they had sent 500 to Austria and have 1.000 waiting for me in Poland

Playing as the Turks, I repeled an attack of 3,000 w/ 1,000 about equal troops. Thats bout' best I can do.

Well, I cant say I've repelled 3000 with 1000 equal level troupes, but for me, I'm heavily handicapped by my generals, and my good generals are the only things I have. So I was dismayed, when I had 2000 english soldiers in cordoba (with a level 3 general), fighting 4000 muslim almohads with alevel 2 general). I had about 4 groups of billmen, and then a bunch of average swordsmen and spearmen (well they had lots and lots and lots of calvary), well I pulled the same manoveur as Sun Tzu.


So I backed my army out to the edge of my map ( I believe this is standard defense precidejure). With my 4 valiant billmen, I killed scores of enemy saharan calvary and camels. Countless, they littered the field like dead birds litter... the ground when there are tons and tons of dead birds.)

The End result was 1000 killed, 2000 Taken captive http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif , and I was surprised to know that I only lost 400 (mostly feudal sergeants and spearmen that filled the Billmen's gaps).

I was playing as the Byzantines, testing NicSO's mod that adds some more units to that faction, when on the 2nd or 3rd year a rebellion breaks out somewhere.

The rebels bring on 5 Skutahoi, 1 Archer, and 1 other heavier inf unit (i don't recallwich one) to a total of 420 men; all I can put up against them is 1 Byz Inf, 2 Skutatoi, 2 Trebizond Archers, 1 Naphta Thrower and 1 Varangian Guard to a total of 412 men. So I'm thinking, with 5 Medium/Heavy Inf units (the archer didn't bother me much) againt my 2 Medium/Heavy Inf, 1 Medium Inf, 3 Missile and 1 Shock Inf (leaving me with 4 hand to hand combat units), maybe i can cause some damage before retreating...You would think the same right?

Well...they came straight at me as I feared, achers in front with 3 lines of infantry behind them; I positioned myself on the edge of a forest, Byz Inf at my left, Skutatoi in the center and right, with the archers behind them, i put the naphta throwers and the Varangian Guard in the forest to my right, to try and compensate de difference of numbers in hand to hand combat units, with a good oldfashioned ambush.

As they came came near I thought time to let those naphties get some work done and scare one of his Inf units, while my archers were alredy hitting another of his Inf units. As the Naptha throwers came off the forest, another enemy Inf unit comes around their target, to strike'em in the right flank They panicked http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif and started to run across the front of the enemy army I thought they are dead meat http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif and prepared to lose the entire unit http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif But those Naphta throwers sure run fast, more so when being chased by a heavily armoured unit that tends to march a bit slower...and so they kept running in fear, chased by the enemy Oh well, at least the were distracting that one http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

The whole enemy force charged at my line of defence, leaving only the archers behind to pound me with arrows (little mosquitoes, these annoying guys with bows&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif, my line held but I could'nt hold much longer, i summoned the Varangians to surprise them and give me aid in my right flank, as my Skutatoi in the center (incidently it was my general) died like flies at the enemies hand. At the same time I kept moving the Naphties around the map (by now they had recovered from their scary encounter)one or two steps ahead from the rebel unit, that stubbornly wanted to see them extint (only killed 3 of my men, but they wanted more...).

The Varangian hit them tottally unprepared, and started to clear my front from right to left Although facing some resistance at first, they routed one enemy unit in 1 minute, just in time too, as I had to make my General in the center leave the field with only 4 men left (withrawing the unit, not routing them...as it seems they still had some fight in them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif ) I placed the Guard in the rear of the next unit that was attacking my other Skutatoi, and slowly but steadily grinded them until they decided to say uncle On the left field, my Byz Inf was bravely holding 2 Skutatoi, but they wouldn't take much more of it....I ordered my remaining, and battered Skutatoi (with 10 men) to aid, while my guard Broke pursuit from their prey and followed to position themselves behind the enemy.
My Archers safely in the forest, lauched an ocasional volley at the enemy archers, maintaining them somewhat at bay. The Naphta throwers were winning the race...but that enemy unit was commanded by a stuborn ass, that surely by then wasn't much appreciated by his troops, kept running trying to catch'em http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

And then it happened My last Skutatoi, severely battered, retreated in a orderly fashion and left me with the Byz Unit(70 men) and the Guard(30 men) against some 100 Skutatoi in 2 units (not counting the 60 that were jogging after my Napthies&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.
Only my attack with the Guard, clashing into their rear could change the fate of the battle (it was already going well enough to make me change my mind into not retreating, as long as my Naptha Trhrowers could run and take 1 unit after them.).....And so I shouted Set loose the dogs of war and ordered the attack, wandering how much more punishment my tired troops could take....and it worked in the first 30 seconds of the Guard attack I killed off his General, his unit, fearful and seeing their leader dead still tried to avenge his death, but they couldn't fight in two fronts, so they routed an ran for home I treated the 2nd unit the same way, and got the same results http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif I was home free YeaY
Meanwhile...my Archers flanked the enemy archers and forced them to the arms of my tired Infantrymen, that thought only of avenging their fallen brethren http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
After putting their archers with the idea that vacations away from my province would be a better idea than making turism there http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif ...i lined up the remaining of my army into two lines: 20 Varangian and 50 Byz Inf in front, and 98 Trebizond archers behind them....and surprise surprise....my Napthies were still doing laps around the map, dragging the last remaining (and exhausted) enemy unit behind them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

As I turned the napthamen towards the reamining core of my army, I saw the infantry taking breath...and after a short wait, my archers were raining arrows on those poor fatiged men...i felt sorry for them, they could no longer take the gold and still kept coming. By now my Inf units were splitted, positioned each one in the flanks, with the archers in the center, raining death on the enemy
I let them come before closing the trap, faked a retreat with the archers while moving the infantry behind them...and when i struck.....well....the rest is history..

Never thought running could make win a battle, but if that remaining enemy Skutatoi hadn't chased after my Napthamen...maybe the outcome would have been different? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Try to imagine what would have happened to that Skutatoi had NOT decided to keep pursuing you naphta throwers and had turned round.
To point about this kind of unit is not what they do, since that rarely happens when your enemy is alert, but what they can do, forcing your enemy to spent units dealing with them.

Still, a remarkable achievement.
I bet that, when the naphta thowers stopped running, they said We have won, and then collapsed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif .

But Total War on the other hand is another story.
I was the Danes who had easily taken over Sweden and Norway in the first few years. I then attacked southward into the HRE, even though they had the largest army in Europe.
I easily defeated their northern garisons, the emperor seemed to think that I wasn't a threat... But then seemingly out of nowhere can a massive german force more than 5000 strong. They took one of my provinces (formerly theirs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) And sent my partilular garison of several hundred vikings/calvary/bowmen of maybe 800 into my castle.
Not bothering to wait a year, HRE attempted to lift the seige and slaughter my men. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif The battle raged http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/argue.gif at the foot of my caster for several minutes. They broke through the gate (with heavy losses but they still easily outnumbered me). I sent my entire army foreward to drive them back behind the gate. Not the happiest of endings but it cut the german forces to more of less a quarter of their strength. It was childs play from then on. They were conquored within a decade.

Well my most recent one was 300 italian Inf. vs 1600 peasants. While they were only peasants the were and http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif load of them and it took forever. In the end I had killed or caputes about 80% of them with about 60% causlties http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Defeating the Mongols at Khazar, when they first landed. A huge battle, with 10,000's of men.

3 rows of spearmen and a rolling reserve of Archers. It eventually wore them down.
