View Full Version : A few quick questions...
I checked a few of the FAQs around the site, and I just had a few general quesitons about STW.
How come I can only build certain buildings in certain provinces?
Also, what are the requirements for being able to produce Kensai? I got my game from the bargain bin at Wal Mart, so it didn't come with any sort of Game Manual.
Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure which buildings you are having trouble with. Of course, some buildings require other prerequisite buildings.
I'll take a guess that you can't build an armory. These require iron deposits, found only in certain provinces. Gun buildings require the European traders first arrive. Some buidlings can only be built once by each faction.
If I didn't answer well enough, maybe you could provide more details?

Also, about the Kensai. Do you have the Mongol Invasion expansions? Thats required to be able to use the Kensai and other new units.
And I'm pretty sure you need only a Legendary Sword Dojo to be able to build Kensai.
Hope that helps
It seems sometimes I can't build an archery dojo, or I can't build a spear dojo. Do either of those have a perquisite? (Other than the basic castle, of course) By the way, I have the Warlord Edition.
Also what are the perquisites for the Sword Dojo? And do any of the clans favor the use of sword-wielding troops?
Is there any kind of tech-tree diagram (Or some kind of FAQ that shows all the units/buildings available, and all of their respective prerequisites) available on the internet?
Crud... I don't see an edit function. I knew I should've looked this word up...

You should look around on the CD. I didn't get warlord edition, I got a budget version of the regular edition sans manual, but it had an electronic copy of the manual on the cd. Yours probably does too.
The sword dojo requires the legendary swordsman event, which happens when one of your troops gets to a high enough honor. That's just the individual guy, not the whole unit, but you can't see individual's honor. Keep fighting, eventually someone will fit the bill.
Doesn't Shogun have right click lists on buildings? I know medieval does, but I can't remember if shogun does or not. Try that - right click on the buildings you can build, see if it gives you a list of what they're prereqs for.
I haven't tried right click yet, but yeah you were right -- there's a .pdf manual on the CD. Another thing; my game frequently crashes, and about 100% of the times it crashes, it was in the train units menu while in the campaign. I tried patching but that doesn't seem to fix it. Any suggestions?
I cannot think of any reason why you are not able to build an archery or spear dojo. Maybe you conquered a province where these have already been built?
Check the game requirements vs your computer - it helps to have a system that exceeds the minimum. Maybe you need to update some drivers, or just do some standard maintenance like defrag (or clean up by deleting other, inferior games that you won't play anymore now that your going to be addicted to Total War).
Maybe one of the mods will move this thread to the apothecary if you describe your crashes, system, etc.

Check the manual on CD, I'd say. For tech problems, try browsing the tech and Apothecary forums here on the .org, it's hard to tell what's causing the crashes without any additional info about your sys.
About the dojos, you know you have to build a small castle first to contruct any unit training buildings, right?
Also there is a maximum number of buildings that you can construct in a province, but since you just started, you shouldn't have hit that limit yet...
Sword dojos also require the swordsman event before you can build them, that means you have to fight a few battles first until one of your warriors becomes a renowned swordsman, at least that's the way it is in the warlord edition.

I thought this too, when I just had the game. It turns out that, if you click the construction-menu, the building/unit-selected bar (center, under) only shows buildings under construction, not those already built in the province. This can be confusing.
But I never knew you can build certain buildings only once. Which buildings are these? I mean, I would expect this to be the case with palaces, but I can build palaces all over Japan (my daimyo seems unable to fight without having slept in a luxurious bed with a roof above his head http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ). And you have to, because they are required for the construction of drill dojo's and the morale bonus of the palace only applies to units build at the location of the palace. So which buildings are these?

Well a cathedral can only be built once. But the others can just only be built once in a given province.
