Navy. And Trade.


A strong navy will make sure that no one can attack you land, seeing how most of your provinces are islands. Trade will make sure you start bring in the money to build your armies. Then use your navy to land your armies where every you want.

Exactly. Take Naples from the Byz, then build an army just good enough to hold off the Papists. Now, with just the three provinces, build a big navy. Make peace with everyone. Build trading posts and ports and upgrade your infrastructure on the three provinces.

Now wait and build up your bank account. When you see an opportunity to take a province from rebels (especially islands) then do so. This way you don't start a war with a trade partner.

When the North African Coast looks vulnerable take it. From there you can use the standard expansion technique, spreading into Spain or the Middle East.

Maintain Naval Superiority.
