How big was the biggest battle you guys have commanded yourselves? Mine was about 9,000 when I was the turks invading a big arse force of hungarians that had come back. It took me around 45 min to complete.

Over 8,000 Mongols against my 5,000 Turks. Took over two hours, lots of horse archer skirmishing.

25,000 mongols and 15,000 of my Kievan troops. Let me just say that I will never again camp out in Khazar awaiting the Mongols because when they come on there morale gets highly boosted because they have nowhere to retreat to.

I think my most epic battle (kind of) occurred when several thousand of my swiss armored pikemen fought off tens of thousands (literally) of the Byzantine Emperor's finest (yeah right). Really I just charged the first wave until they routed, then camped the edge of the map and mowed down the reinforcements until time ran out. It was pretty fun though.

Stopping the Egyptian advance in Croatia as HRE, some 2000 soldiers against perhaps 6000 Eggys. Took me two and a half hours before I killed them all, and I wouldn't have survived if I didn't have a merc( ) unit of Italian infantry holding the very center of my lines. They were reduced down to 30 men, but stood firm, God bless them. After that, I honored them with putting them in my greatest citadel, retiring them for the rest of the game for great services for king and country…

BTW, ichi, love your sigs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Must be against the Mongols 17,000 of them against 6,500 Turks in Khazar. 3 hrs and I have never fought the horde since when they first appear Other than that biggest battle was against my English (2,600) against the Turks (4,800), the Turks had retreated repeatedly and ended up in Anatolia with a nice position on a hill. It was a straight slug out, Gallowlasses/clansmen/FMAA and billmen/ halberd against a lot of saracen inf and futus, with some cavalry on the sides. Drove them from the field and beat off two waves of reinforccments with longbows, and then they all routed. Only 1,800 Turkish dead though so I dont think they all deployed.

In the books:

Sauron - Orcs, Uruks, Olog-Hai, Variags, Easterlings, Mountain-Trolls, Haradrim and their Mumakil; total unknown, probably +30000.
Human Forces - Gondorian (+-6000) , Rohan (6000), Aragorn's reinforcements (+-8000). The book isn't precise.

one time i was HRE and i had about 40 inquistors all in one province hehe, i guess the peasants didnt like that, because about 30,000 of them popped up, i defeated them with a comparatively small army(around 700) but they were all elite troops, so it was fun. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif the province was Bohemia if your wondering, hey they should have the farms sufferer for years after that because so many peasants died.

Mongols in Khazar vs my Poles in 1231

12'000 of them
4'000 of me

+-8000 Dead, 2k prisoners
for 1300. Pretty good odds

Also, Rebellion in Portugal playing as English

1200 of me vs 11'000 of them (Mostly peasantry)
6'000 kills and 2.5k captured for under 200

One unit of 19 starting chiv m@arms took over 800 kills. Spent 40 mins surrounded and still ended with 11 men

I just leave the provinces like portugal and scotland alone (and all the crappy ones like arabia) alone until the very end of the game so i dont waste money maintaining a garrison there. Plus, I like to corner the comp in places like that with a really small army so the faction doesn't return in some inoppertune moment.

Well, I have some Khazar numbers for ya also:

Mongols: 18.600
Russians 4.000

Victory I just camped my last 600 men in the forest and waited for an hour with speed on max.

Total playtime: 4 hrs.

I find there are a couple of majorly nasty provinces for rebellion - Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, Sciiily, Rome, Bavaria, Kiev. And I might have missed a few. Ireland in my experience is the worst of the lot tho. Yesterday playing as Russia I managed 9 straight rebellions 9 I'd never seen 3 in a row before, then I get 9. Coulda been more but I lost cos the english re-appeared and I couldn't get any more troops accross.

Game Over!!!
12-24-2003, 15:59
In the game I'm playing now had 9000 Horde against my 1200 Byz units in Georgia(?). Didn't know GH showed up in Georgia(?) as well as Khazar...that was a surprise. Brought in several units from Armies defending a bunch of provinces from all over. The 'hodge-podge' army was able to beat back the horde (over 3 hours) and gain over 20,000 florins from ransom.
Hanging in the trees after my archers were out of ammo and conserving 3 units of Kats saved my @ss. What made it soooo much fun was that I din't know the GH also spawned somewhere else other than Khazar. Had to assemble an army from a bunch of units from surrounding provinces without any planning.
It was the best battle I have ever fought just because of the surprise factor. I wish CA could have made the GH spawn date and location a random event. 2 or 3 random provinces somewhere in the East plus the date +- 10 from 1230. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

My greatest battle is on STW believe it or not. The GH invaded Japan w/ SUPERIOR #'s an it wasn't until they pushed me back to the capitol that I managed my first real victory. The 8,000+ GH attacked my Samurai army of 2,500- Using calvary to take out ther archers early in the game saved me. The entire battle took a couple hours ue to all the reinforcments they were geting. None of my men routed despite suffering 70% casualties. I thank thoes brave men...

Several big battles against the GH playing different factions. But the most memorable was playing a german campaing and worried about my eastern front. My best forces were fighting the ruskies and turks, when my Almohad allies decided it was a fine time to stab me in the back. Some 6K+ screaming elmo heads against less than 2k germs. There I understood why gothic troops are so apreciated. The elmos lost more than 3k men, no prisoners left alive, to less than 500 casualties. 3 star general gets nice v&v's, Skilled defender and secret blood lover. Maybe not the biggest, but certainly one of the most memorable battles I've ever had. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I just had what I would definatly call my most memorable battle. In bulgaria vs the Scicilians. I was playing as Italy. 2 hours of fighting in the trees with foot troops

I couldnt even see the fighting for the most part lol. Was just a case of watching morale and troops in the display at the bottom. I won in the end, very even numbers, But without the abiility to manoveur, it was a massacre on both sides, both of us loosing around 2000 troops. I just got lucky cos my only unit of knights caught his general out in the open, and a couple of his units broke.

Luck maketh the general ^^

Aymer, get the complete guide to middle earth by Robert Foster. In there it says there were 30,000 Haradrim alone, so numbers probably exceeded 100,000. At least.

My biggest wa in Khazar (surprise surprise)

Byzantines - 10000
Mongols - 14000

Needless to say that I probably will never ever defend Khazar like that. The battle took a better part of two days to complete. After a certain point i detested the sight of Mongols on the horizon.

Thats that.

uumm...I don't really hang around the campaign map too much, I win most of the battles...(prob cause i have the difficulty on easy...sshh&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif But, there was this one battle that had me litterally sweating
Well...I dont wanna waiste your time on the details, so I will get down to business...I had a small company of my trusted heavy jans. I saw the french and egyptians were at war, and even with a rebelion in that province. so i jumped right on in Well, I was hopin to kick back & relax, but NOPE the egyptians came right at me My jans relieved the camels of their riders...and i persued them to where their reinforcements would come, and took them out. so, it leaves just the rebels & the french. i decided to get rid of the rebels & their camels too, so i took em out with a breeze. i had a rough time with the french, they had their chiv men at arms put up some resistance, but soon i took the whole field.
kills:...around 5,000
losses:...around +200

Quote[/b] ]get the complete guide to middle earth by Robert Foster. In there it says there were 30,000 Haradrim alone, so numbers probably exceeded 100,000. At least.
Well, I've re-read the Pelennor battle in ROTK, and there is a passage when Éomer is sorrounded by the Haradrim and a new Mordor host coming from Osgiliath, that the Haradrim were, at that time, 3 times as numerous as the Rohirrim. So:

Rohirrim - 6000 (before the battle)
Haradrim - 18000 (before the battle, at the most)

So if we take 18000/30000 = 0.6
If we compare Tolkien's number with Robert's number, we get:

0.6*100000 = 60000 for the whole Mordor army.

Quite a BIG difference, isn't it? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

That is just one of the many reasons why most Tolkien buffs, including myself, say that Robert's guide is deeply flawed... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Turks 16500

A whopping 7 hr and 20 min battle fought to the bitter end as my troops defended the province. Boy that was one sleepness night At least I won.

Oh, it was keviket (sp?) mod. Giving russians Vikings = Their saving grace. PLus since I love them, playing them early is even better

They hit me with Polish retainers, mounted Sargents and a lot of woodsmen and spearmen, only a few archers. God it was a right good old slaughter http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've had some mammoth battles against the Horde myself, but play with the time limit, so don't get these multi-hour events. But that said, I've seldom had battles that were not decided in that period.

My single largest battle to date was a very recent defence of Constantinople as the Turks against the combined armies of the Italians and Hungarians. They had 5000 vs my 2000, and both their armies were on the field together. But I drove them all off, and that was very satisfying
