I want to start a campaign (perhaps a GA campaign, perhaps using the Wes mod) in MTW 2.1, early. What is the most difficult faction to play? I have won with the English, the HRE, the Italians and the Welsh (Viking campaign), so I would like to try a different faction.

Thanks in advance. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

Early Turks are Easy, Just corner the Egyptian Sultan by invading from Syria, into Palestine and Tripoli... then roll up, kill him off and offer large sums of money to his former Generals

Poland, Hungary and Aragon are the most challenging games in Early for me.

I say High period Byzantines are the hardest overall, you don't have Constantinople, your forces are getting outmoded and the Turks at the gates (and to make matter worse the vast Golden Horde are only thirty years off).

Now thats a tough position to be in

Also the Russian Campaign in the High Period is very tough with the sudden arrival of the Horde and the lack of any good money making provinces.

Denmark is hell's easy, as soon as you discover that the HRE won't attack you. You are surrounded by rebel provinces waiting for your own rule. Take them all, grow, and later you'll be powerful. Pole's position, OTOH, is far more vulnerable. I saw several times the Germans at war with them.

Northumbrians in Viking. Russians, Hungarians, or Poles otherwise. The Byz are tough in Late.

Hehehe. Well I am currently playing Russian High campaign. It is pretty chalenging and I like challenge ;-) The war with the Horde is nearing its 15th year. Tthey appeared with about 17000 troops, 12000 in Khazar and further 5000 in Georgia.

I would recommend the Ruskies simply because it is fun to develop you abysmal infrastructure and build up your massive armies only to realize that you pale in comparison to the Horde. Seeing 12 (thats right 12) Mongol Heavy Cavalry in the opening wave made me shit my pants (figuratively speaking).

You also have to watch for your neigbours like Poland and Danes - they may have an idea of invading you when you are weak. Add to that the unruly Livonians and Lithuanians plus miserable income and you've got yourself one pretty tough faction to play.

Well, hopefully thats enough to convince you to give them a try.

Play the Ruskies http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Cheers.

In the High period, I always thought those factions that have to deal most directly with the Mongols are the hardest - Russians, Turks, Byz. In the Late period, I think those factions that start with the fewest, poorest provinces are the hardest - Russia and Poland probably fit this bill best. I have not found a faction that I thought was overly hard if you start in Early because there is so much time.

I couldn't disagree with the preceding speakers. Several times I went through tought years with the Polish, but managed to win. I played Russians in High twice and faced the GH masses sucsessfully achieving what was to achieve. I admit some real challenge playing Turks in High, too.

Those had been awesome campaings that I like to think back of at times. But actually, the hardest time I am having in my current campaign playing HRE, GA, High Game. I have to wage war on 4 (four) fronts - France, Danes, Hungarians and Italians. In last turn the Polish reappeared in Pomerania and also (miraculously) in an always-mine province of Brandenburgia. I have been playing 60+ so far and all what I was able to achieve (still barely) was to hold there. I am NOWHERE near achieving ANY of GA goes besides Homelands.

It is a damn tough game (for me).

Byzan on late are a very good play.

Apart from that maybe try the French on early as they have a lot of borders with many possible enemies......

I always found the French in early to be quite easy. Kick the English off the continent in the first 15 years, then kick back and build your farming. Take over Spain, build more farming and then start trading and the game is yours. Of course if you are playing a GA game, then I don't know beans about it because I never play that way.

I find that the easiest are the poles and hungarians, russians, etc - Those with free access to regions with no true owner. Hardest, definatly Aragorn I think. Scicily has a chance to control the whole mediterranian seaboard but aragorn has to struggle hemmed in, and even then, fight the scicillians if it wants the water.

Having said that, I find late Turks difficult if the Byzantine come back strongly.

Man The french are great in GA mode/early. You have to kick the english, launch 3 crusades and build a catidel in Tripoli before 1205. And all this while fighting of the germans, the aragonese and the spanish. Heck, you HAVE to crusade just to get your homeland points.

Aragonese any era, Russians in High.

I´ve only played "early" games, so far, and I find the Aragonese the most difficult fac to play. In one game, thogh, I was lucky and took Navarre, Valencia right away. In just 10 years more I took Aquitaine, Toulouse, Provence, Coedoba and Granada. Builded up and went for my iberian "brother". Then Italy was ex-com so I took Genoa, Corsika and Sardinia. Same thing with Sicilians so I took Sicily from them.
Unfortunately, with almost all my troops on the northern/ eastern frontier the darn Almohads launched an unstoppable invasion of southern Iberia. Game over

The Polish are tough. They are dirt poor with an awful Royal line.

If you go for the MedMod the try the HRE and get ready for a gangbang. Don't play in the GA mode because not all factions have defined GA goals and it will crash.

I tried HRE with MedMod and got my ass kicked, whatever faction you go for is difficult to conqueor and the other will quickly gang up on you..

Just won a GA game with Hugary using MedMod though, great fun and som epic battles against the Mongols in North Eastern Europe.

In the early area, the only hard faction is the Aragonese because their expansion is drastically curtained by powerful neighbours. Of course, once you have managed to step in the spaniard's shoes and get rid of the Almohads, things become quite easy. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
