I wondered if anyone else has noticed that alan mercenary cavalry does not seem to appear in inns anymore (since the patch preceding VI: before the patch, alans would appear in inns in a rather predictable manner)...

I have played a whole campaign as byzantines and never saw ONE unit of alans in any of my inns. What's wrong? Is there an additional building on top of an inn that has to be built to see these guys appear? Similarly, I have never seen amulghavars appear in any inns I have ;(

Alans are only available in Khazar and Georgia now.

The likelyhood is that as you were the Byzantines these provinces were conquered early and then built up.
Correct?
If so then they were probably far from the frontlines and hence conflicts lessening the chances of mercenaries. Also if they are built up the higher level castles restrict mercenary availability, lessening you chances.
If not correct, then they just weren't available.

I had heard about Georgia: so I purposely left Georgia (Byzantine by default in Early) undeveloped: just had a border fort and an inn there for about 250 years... No mercenaries ever appeared in that inn...

Still, if the province isn't on the front lines it just doesn't attract mercs.

Well, since it was a GA game, I left Khazar to the rebels; Armenia and Rum to the Turks... how much more of a frontline do you want (Georgia squeezed in between the rebels and the Turks)? I was at war with both: with the Turks and the Rebels...

You want to know the answer to your problem?
Mod the game to allow Alan Mercenary Cavalary to be trainable in Georgia and Khazar.
I've moded the game to allow Almughavars and AMC to be trainable with:

-Almughavars; Spearmaker2 + Inn (only in Aragon)
-Alan Mercenary Cavalary; Horsebreeder2 + Inn (only in Georgia and Khazar)

Problem solved... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I know I can mod them in: just wanted to figure out why cannot I get the alans the way they were supposed to appear. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif For that matter, I can mod the game to have nukes available to mongols in 1231 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Sounds like just bad luck. There is nothing that says they have to appear...

Yes, that's why I'm not a big fan of modding unless it fixes some obvious deficiencies left by the developers. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

But when it comes to gameplay vs. historical accuracy, I choose (mostly) gameplay

I know strangely they dont appear anymore with the 2.01 patch..so i modded them aswell to be buildeable only in khazar and georgia..before the patch there used to be one available in trebzond on the first round and after that rarely did you see them..
