I'm operating an Intel P4 2.8 Gig, 1 gig DDR, ASUS FX 56OO 256mb, XP windows.
My problem apart from being fresh to a CPU system...the game freezes after about 5mins on average or if I'm lucky 10mins on strat screen as well with weird speech noises in the throne room or when I get updates on completed work as a pre warning to the freeze.
So how do I play simple...I just re-enter the game, re-load & carry on till the next crash saving very very often & now I'm hooked.
Any help would be a God Send as I'm really into this game even with the small amount of time I've had on it...Cheers.
I've read something about am XP emulator thats an add on with the XP programme so you can run it o'le styles since its an old game. Also read something about a patch that came out since EA could'nt be bothered trying to fix the problem.
Finally someone put me onto you're site & I must say the work effort the individuals & team as a whole suggest...is awsome in reading answers to questions. I've gone into properties making changes but no joy & re-installed over the install, uninstalled etc.
Worse comes to worse is there anything else out there similar to this game set in this time period. I'm meaning Japanese, Chinese wars not Roman etc.

Compatability mode? That's built into XP, all you need to do is activate it. Create a shortcut to Shogun and right click on it, choose properties. Click on the compatability tab and then select your desired mode, 95 and 98 are good for Shogun in most cases. You shoukdn't need any of the other settings so just click ok. From now on you will always need to run Shogun with this shortcut or the compatability mode won't work, unless you want to hunt down every variation on shogun.exe and alter them. The shortcut is much easier.

Sound problems in my experience are best sorted by turning off sound acceleration in windows control panel->sounds and audio->audio->advanced then turn sound accel off and ok it. This fixes the screaching, static and jabbering voices on my PC but you will probably need to turn acceleration back on for all other games.

As a further tip (buy two, get one free or something) if you have direct x 9 make sure you have 9.0b, this is the only version to work smoothly with Shogun in my experience and upgrading from 9.0a provided a much needed boost to stabilty.

As far as games similar to Shogun, well medieval: Total War is the closest, with its add-on Viking Invasion. There aren't many games like this out there, maybe Europa Universalis 2 for the campaign aspects and you can play as Japan in that. The battles are rubbish though, but the camapign is more complex and detailed.

Cheers GriefMaker...lol yeh took you're advice but haven't checked out the mods yet. Frogbeastegg made the adjustments & wotnot to the compatibility mode, shortcut n' all...it does work to some extent. I get longer playing time of up to 30 minutes but still freezes so will play around with it somemore...sounds like you're a swordswomen weilding wench with you're quote at the end?

111Jace, if you haven't already, you should post in the apothecary and perhaps the tech weenies can help narrow down your problem. Who knows, you might even get it running properly http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

:hands 111 Jace a cookie in reward for his powers of observation: You'd be suprised how many people don't notice that. I suppose the avatar is a bit misleading though but I like it and it stays put until/unless it becomes impossible for me to use it.

...lol, yes well its a pretty niffty quote I would only use a quote like that only if I could back it up with the skills http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

tech weenies? *adds jacque to the list of 'handle later' customers*

froggy,

isnt that quote from dragonheart?

ok, old game on a new system. go to the tweak thread in the apothecary and start trimming xp. go to www.blackviper.com and start turning off those unneeded and unwanted services. no sense in even playing around with drivers until you've gotten rid of some of the 'fat' off that system. you could have the 'right' drivers and not even know it till you clean that hog, xp, up. get tweak-ui and use it. get x-teq and use it. trim that hog down and then we'll see how things are working.

Yes, with a few alterations. It's a dopy load of crap I have believed for most of my life (I grew up reading King Arther, Beowulf, Tristan and Iseult etc and this kind of stuff sinks in when you are 5 ) but the film phrased it better than I could so I borrowed it. The alteration would, of course, be the 'his' to 'her'. I was persuaded to change it the last time the 'wait, froggy's a girl' thing cropped up, this version is supposed to be less misleading Judging from the spate of people suprised to find out I was a girl in the 'thanks froggy' threads I don't think it worked. I could change my avatar to a female one and that might help but I like my archer and I would only swap it for a geisha but that's a whole new kettle of fish with added confusion and problems - assassin avatar. Well that and the non-existence of a geisha avatar http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif The archer stays put

Ah well the confusion doesn't bother me and it does get quite funny at times (as seen in one of the thanks froggy topics: Who's the man? Good question - who is that man the crowd is carrying? froggy is over here ) and having a slightly changed version of the quote saves me the trouble of remembering to update my sig to put the quote references back. I had been meaning to do that for nearly 4 months, this way is much easier

Sounds like either overheating, memory trouble, or a shared interrupt line. Can you run 3DMark2001SE and a CPU Burn test (in high priority mode) for 20 mins without trouble? If you can that would tend to rule out overheating and memory issues.

Shared interrupt lines can be an issue. I had some trouble with my ASUS a few years ago because there are four interrupt lines shared by all PCI slots, AGP, etc. If certain devices are on the same line, all hell breaks lose. Simple solution in my case was to move the network card around.

256MB or RAM is a bit short for XP.
