The Mongols came a few years back, and I decided that it would be interesting to see if I could bribe a great deal of their army. I set out with 15 emissaries and began to bribe the horde in clumps as they attacked the surrounding provinces. In one such province I was successful in bribing an army of 550 men, however 10,500 Mongol troops from a neighboring province moved back to command a defense.

I was able to take just over 1,000 of the enemy before I was routed off the field. However, most importantly I was successful in killing the Mongol king. With no heir and with loyalties lost, the remaining horde armies became incredibly cheep to bribe. I was successful in bribing all but two stacks of what had been Mongol units, and wiped out those Mongol units who didn’t join me. I was left with an army of over 6,500 ex-Mongol units in one province, and 2,500 in another. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

I've done that on my Byz campaign.

They atacked Khazar and Volga-Bulgaria.
First a strict defense of Khazar, killing the Khan.
After the Khan was dead, all remaining forces were Rebels.

Then I bribed all of the Rebel forces. All were in Volga-Bulgaria. Some were the inicial ones that attacked Volga-Bulgaria, and some of the remaining ones that I routed in Khazar.

Brilliant work Shamus A very Asian-Turkic way of fighting (actually this is pretty much what Turkic tribes have been doing to each other LOL). I havent heard of such a good idea since a long time, as people usually tend to sit on Khazar with thousands of men, waiting for the Mongols.

As the Russians, I was able to kill their king in the first attack. Not expecting the rebels to attack me, I shifted my forces towards the Polish threat. The Khazarian rebels attacked all of the surrounding provinces Civil war ensued with me coming out the loser. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

A good tactic vs the Mongols is to build a fortress in Khazar. Have some good men to retreat to it once the Mongols attack. The AI will assume it is a good idea to attack the fortress since it outnumbers you (about 10,000 to 800 or so). Use suicide cavalry to kill all of their artillery once they assault, and then once they assault the gate let the fortress do the work. As long as you have a stalwart unit defeending you will take out a huge amount of the Mongol army.

Don't worry about the garrison starving, since the AI will attack on the very first opportunity it sees you so horribly outnumbered.

I've played a few russian high era games & if I hold any adjoining provinces to the horde they will not accept an alliance. They just attack as soon as they can & end up getting wiped out after 15 years.

I don't like mongol heavy cavalry as they don't have irrestible charge, I would always be interested in aquiring their horse archers though .

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but i've seen this basic idea (kill/assasinate khan, bribe stacks of now rebel GH troops) posted for over the past year, so this isn't like discovering electricity http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif. Usually the title of the thread is something like "GREAT IDEA NEW TACTIC" OR "AMAZING WAY TO DESTROY THE HORDE". It's fun the first time or two ( http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif ), but you can decapitate every faction with agents, and then swoop in with emissaries to bribe their now rebel army. Medieval Total Bribing, anyone? Like i said, not trying to put anyone down, but the basic idea gets posted every few months.
