Hey All

Merry Christmas Everyone,

I'm new to new to this forum, but I'm not new to Medieval Total War (the Single Player Campaign http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif). Well, I just bought Viking Total War used at a local EB, and I'm having trouble with the Medieval Campaign mode. Here are my questions to the Guru's of M:TW

1) Im around 1200 AD, and well, my army just turned capoot. I'm the Danes, and I have all of Western Europe (Germany France); I have nothern Europe (russia and Scandinavia), all of this is due to my landsman and Huskcarls. I have about 12 of each unit, but to my dismay, I can't build anymore Is this regular? Why are they outdated? Can I unoutdate them with any configurations?

2) My second question involves Berserkers. Well, I'm PART norwegian, some I'm pumped to play Vtw, and i love the MTW map. SOOOooo, I settled for playing with the danes. Well, on Frogbeastegg's AWESOME faq list
http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin....=13453, (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=13453,)
here on this forum, it says beserkers can be built in the Medieval Total War campaign, now... Can the danes build them? And if they can, whats the build order? I have the Castle below Fortresses and I haven't even seen a building that has any prerequisites for them. I'm pumped to use the Beserkers, but I can't find them at all http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? How can I build Beserkers?

Regardless, I love M:tw, and I know that everyone else here does to. It beats any other RTS EVERYDAY of the year.
And with that, Merry Christmas again to you all, and Happy new Year.

Certain units are only buildable in certain periods the periods are early, high and late and I believe they correspond to the dates of the other SP campaigns. You can remove the restriction but it will require some modding of the text file's all the info should be available on the org check the dungeon most of what you need should be there.
What year is it in the game I havent played the danes but I suspect if you cant build your other early faction units then berserkers are now obsolete and as a result unbuildable.

Thanks

Well, I had the inkling that if I can't build Lannsmen then I couldn't build beserkers, but somehow I doubt, that if I had the second biggest castle (sorry i can't quite pick the name from my brain, christmas jollies. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif;)), then I probably would be able to build Beserkers.

About the unit restrictions in each period, it makes sense. But I'll look around for the ability to mess with my .txt files. Gosh. I love Viking Huscarles, they kill quickly and get killed quickly. It makes for some rather violent battles.

Anyone want to assuage my computer unsuavity, and help me with these .txt files? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Viking Raider Cavalry, Thralls, Landsmenn, Karls and Huskarls are all only available in EARLY in unmodded MTW. The Berserkers are also only available in early but are REBEL only, ie they aren't buildable ever, they only appear in revolts and only in Norway or Sweden.

The best way to mod units is with the Gnome Editor that you can get here. (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Tools.shtml)

1) Download and setup the editor.
2) Launch the editor and choose Load File.
3) Navigate to your MTW directory which is usually C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War, and choose CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11.

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING FURTHER MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF CRUSADER_UNIT_PROD11, right-click -> copy, right-click -> paste.

This loads the text file in a easy to read format. Take a while and look through it reading the column descriptions at the top. It becomes mostly self explanatory quickly.

To make LANDSMENN, KARLS, HUSKARLS available later
4) Scroll down until you find the units you want (they are right at the bottom 178, 179, 180). Scroll across to column 20 and it should say EARLY for all of them. If you want them to be available in Early and High replace EARLY with EARLY,HIGH, or for all periods replace with ALL_PERIODS.

To make BERSERKERS buildable
5) Scroll slighty up from the bottom (151), then scroll over to column 17. This is where you list the buildings you think you should need to build them, for eg {CASTLE10, SWORDSMITH2, INN} which is a Citadel + Swordsmiths Workshop + Inn in game.
Then scroll across to column 50. This is who can build the unit. You need to replace FN_REBEL with FN_DANISH to let the Danish build them. Column 51 is the provinces where the unit can be built, blank is everywhere and the names in this column are those they are RESTRICTED to. Names can be added or removed.

For the troop buildings there are usually 4 levels eg
SWORDSMITH, SWORDSMITH2, SWORDSMITH3, SWORDSMITH4 that correspond to the in game levels of Swordsmith, Swordsmiths Workshop, Swordsmiths Guild and Master Swordsmith. This is similar for all of them.

For Castles the major ones are CASTLE (Fort), CASTLE4 (Keep), CASTLE7 (Castle), CASTLE10 (Citadel) and CASTLE13 (Fortress). The other numbers in between are wall upgrades.

You can also edit the buildings using the Gnome Editor by choosing CRUSADER_BUILD_PROD13 instead of CRUSADER_UNIT_PROD11 in step 3. Remember to back up this before changes

When you first start out try only changing one unit at a time and then testing to make sure your changes worked. It gets infuriating when you make many changes and then the game won't work. Which change caused the problem? So small changes at first.
You could do this with your current game by quitting and relaunching MTW and reloading your game. The units should become available. You need to quit and reload after each change for the new text files to take effect.

Wow,

Quokka mucho gracias. That helps so much. I'd stay and write paragraphs about my gratitude, but I'm too excited, I'm going to go play with my Vikings

Thanks again.

I'll be careful with my changes. Its like Half life Scripting. :P (Hopefully this forum isn't an anti-fps crowd, although I get the feeling it might be).
